Griffin Marriner, a fourth grader at Lanigan Elementary School, is an avid reader and spelling wiz. He competed in the WCNY Spelling Bee at Onondaga Community College in January.

Marriner placed 10th out of 36 finalists in the Post-Standard-sponsored spelling bee. Marriner and one female student from Baldwinsville were the only fourth-grade finalists.

A majority of those placing in the top 35 of the regional competition were seventh- and eighth-grade students.

Marriner moved on to the oral part of the competition that was held earlier this month. He made it to the third round of the televised event and came in 25th place.

Marriner found that the tie breaker words were harder in the oral competition than they were in the written test. Ultimately, it was the word “doctrinaire” that stumped him.

“I accidently but a k between the c and the t,” he said.

He studies by finding new words in the books he’s reading and then looks in the dictionary for the definition.

For the competition, he used the Scripps National Spelling-bee Word Club web site and completed practice tests. The winner of the oral round is eligible to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee held annually in Washington, D.C.
