Salvation Army officer to speak at RSVP volunteer orientation

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a division of SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations, will hold a volunteer orientation for retired or semi-retired adults Wednesday, Dec. 12.

The 2 p.m. session will take place in the Oswego Salvation Army’s community room, 73 W. Second St.

RSVP staff members Ellen Wahl and Tracie Wallace will conduct the orientation, along with guest speaker Cathy Major, a co-captain of the Oswego Salvation Army, who will provide an overview of the Salvation Army’s volunteer needs and program services.

The Oswego Salvation Army is one of more than 100 partnering agencies and programs collaborating with RSVP to bring needed services to and enhance quality of life for Oswego County residents.

The purpose of RSVP is to encourage older Americans and nonprofit agencies to mutually benefit from the experience of retirees.

Those who are retired or considering retirement and are wondering, “What is there to do?” or who feel that they want to give back but don’t know where to turn may benefit from this session, organizers said.

In addition to recruiting, placing and supporting volunteers, RSVP offers Mature Living, a bimonthly newsletter with news and information both national and local in scope and of interest to older Americans.

For more information, to sign up for the orientation session or to receive Mature Living, contact RSVP at 312-2317 or rsvp@oswego.edu.

RSVP has served Oswego County since 1973. The program has been at the forefront of the productive aging movement, launching programs that answer critical needs and help strengthen Oswego County, such as tax aides, “6 Steps to Better Balance,” the Osteo Bone Builders Program and more.
