Sandy Creekby Andrew Henderson

An Oswego County Court jury convicted a 35-year-old Sandy Creek resident of burglary and assault Tuesday.

The jury, comprised of six men and six women, convicted Michael T. Reitz, of 201 Salisbury St., Sandy Creek, of two counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree assault, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The charges constituted all of the counts in the indictment.

Oswego County Court Judge Walter Hafner presided over the trial. The case was prosecuted by Chief Assistant District Attorney Mark Moody. Reitz was represented by Salvatore Lanza.

On Christmas Day last year, Reitz broke into the New Haven home of Michelle Chambers, his ex-girlfriend. After breaking into the house, he assaulted Chambers with a knife, slashing her face a number of times in front of her three children. The attack resulted in permanent scarring to her face.

At trial, Moody told the jury that Reitz and Chambers had been in a relationship until the end of October of 2011. His apaprent motive for the attack was his concern that she was seeing other men.

Reitz entered the home wearing a mask, but Chambers and two of her children testified that they recognized his voice, build, and way of walking.
