Fulton varsity softball team earns first win

Friday the 13th was far from a day of bad luck for the Fulton varsity softball team.

The Lady Raiders cruised to victory against Cortland for the team’s first win of the season. Friday’s win also marked Coach Derek Lyon’s first win as a varsity softball coach.

The Lady Raiders scored six runs during the bottom of the fifth inning, which propelled them to a 13-1 win.

Fifth inning rally leads Homer past Hannibal baseball

The Hannibal varsity baseball team went into the fifth inning of its April 5 game against Homer with a two-run lead.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Homer went on to score four runs during the fifth inning to seize control of the game.

Homer then added two more runs to bring the total to six unanswered runs en route to a 7-3 win over Hannibal.

Hannibal softball team looking to improve on last year’s record

According to new Hannibal varsity softball voach Jill Dunkleberger, the Lady Warriors have what it takes to improve upon last season’s record.

However, the goal of improving on last season’s record served as the catalyst for other goals that the team has decided upon: the number of wins the team believes that it can earn as well as the acceptable amount of errors per game, said Dunkleberger.

Hannibal will feature a balanced group of both younger and experienced players this season. Dunkleberger has been pushing her veteran players to serve as leadership figures for their younger teammates.

Quickness expected to be key for Fulton girls lacrosse

For the Fulton girls varsity lacrosse team to achieve its goals, it will have to develop into a more cohesive unit at a steady pace this season, according to assistant coach Andrew Karpinko.

If the lady Raiders can maintain a steady development, Fulton will aim to have a winning record and compete for a league title.

But the expectations do not end there. If the Lady Raiders can qualify for post-season play, they feel that they can accomplish a lot in sectional play.

Phoenix boys track team looks to build upon 2011

Last season, the Phoenix boys varsity track and field team finished with a 5-3 record in league participation.

This season, Coach Keith Walberger said his team’s goal is to improve on its third-place finish in the Freedom League.

In terms of experience and maturity, Phoenix expects to have a balanced mix of participants in 2012.

Hannibal girls track team receives boost in athleticism

Hannibal girls varsity track And field coach Sue Friedrich suggests that her team’s goals for the season can be found in three areas of the sport: individual effort, focus, and attitude.

“The girls have the goal of doing their personal best, being focused and staying positive.” Friedrich said.

With only five athletes returning from last year’s team, the Lady Warriors lack experience.

Returning to the team are Kristen D’Angelo, Micheala Sheldon, Sierra Ingersoll, Reagan Rusaw, and Gabby Griffin.

New Fulton softball coach has postseason aspirations

If you ask new Fulton varsity softball coach Derek Lyons what some of his goals are for his debut season, his response is straight to the point.

Making daily improvements is the most important goal that his team can accomplish in 2012.

However, Lyons doesn’t stray far from a bigger aspiration. He said that every team should set out to earn a sectional playoff bid.  “We have made it clear that one of our other goals is to make sectionals,” he said.

In 2012, Fulton will feature a senior-laden team that has been around the program for many years.
