Late surge leads Mexico to win

The Phoenix varsity baseball team had a three-run lead going into the sixth inning of its game against Mexico Monday.

Mexico, however, stifled Phoenix with an incredible rally, which allowed them to escape with a 5-4 win.

Following a competitive first inning, the game was tied at 1-1. After a couple of scoreless innings, Phoenix took a three-run lead. The Firebirds scored three unanswered runs during the top of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-1 lead.

With opportunities seemingly slipping away from them, Mexico saved the best for last.

During the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tigers scored four runs, which put them ahead by a run at 5-4. Mexico’s late rally left Phoenix with no answers as the Tigers held on for the one-run win.

Leading the way for Mexico was John Eastman and his two hits and three RBIs. Carlton Loomis and Matt Hirsch each chipped in a hit and an RBI while Nick Dolbear and Eamon Lacey combined to tally three hits for The Tigers.

J-D rallies for 14-5 win over Fulton

After two innings of its game against Jamesville-DeWitt Wednesday, there was optimism in the dugouts of the Fulton varsity baseball team.

Though Fulton led by four runs going into the third inning, its optimism proved to be short lived. Jamesville-DeWitt erupted for 13 unanswered runs en route to a 14-5 win.

By the end of the first inning, the Raiders had a 4-0 lead. Both teams scored runs during the second inning as Fulton maintained a four-run lead at 5-1.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, it was all downhill from there. Jamesville-DeWitt exploded for 11 unanswered runs during the bottom of the third and fourth innings to take a seven-run lead at 12-5.

Fulton girls lacrosse wins thriller

With only seven minutes left in its game last Tuesday, the Fulton girls lacrosse team trailed Mexico 6-3.

Victory didn’t seem to be in the cards for the Lady Raiders, however, they staged a furious rally that was capped off by a last second goal for the 7-6 win.

After essentially playing an even first half of play, the game was tied at 2-2 at halftime. During the second half, Mexico outscored Fulton by two goals to take a 6-3 lead into the game’s final minutes.

Oswego rallies past Fulton softball

The Oswego softball team erupted for five runs during the second half of its game against Fulton Saturday.

After two scoreless innings, Fulton took a 1-0 lead during the bottom of the third inning. However, Oswego soon took over. The Lady Bucs scored four runs during the top of the fifth inning to take a three-run lead at 4-1.

During the top of the sixth inning, Oswego added on another run, which put the finishing touches on the 5-1 win.

Phoenix softball team holds weekend tournament

The Phoenix varsity softball team hosted a softball tournament last weekend. The tournament featured Auburn, Syracuse East, and Mexico.

Phoenix finished with a record of 1-1 in the tournament. The Lady Firebirds came up short against Auburn 3-2, but they were able to come away with a 6-3 win against Mexico.

Auburn’s Ali Van Giesen pitched a solid game against Phoenix. Van Giesen struck out six batters while giving up only two runs on three hits.

Hannibal’s Alexander Taylor hits two home runs in win

Alexander Taylor played a key role in the Hannibal varsity softball team’s May 3 win against Red Creek.

Taylor hit two home runs as the Lady Warriors cruised to a 7-0 win.

Hannibal quickly set the tone. During the top of the first inning, the Lady Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Hannibal added four more runs during the top of the third and fourth innings which brought its lead to 6-0.

Fulton softball loses to Phoenix

The Phoenix Varsity Softball Team wasted little time looking the part of division leader when it took on Fulton Wednesday.

Going into the fifth inning, Phoenix led 5-0 and was seeking the knockout punch. Eight runs later, the Lady Firebirds were en route to a 14-2 win.

The Lady Firebirds got off to a solid start against Fulton. They led 3-0 by the end of the second inning. Two more runs during the bottom of the third inning brought the Lady Firebirds’ lead to 5-0.

Quick start leads Westhill past Hannibal

Westhill got off to a quick start against the Hannibal varsity baseball team and never looked back when the teams met Saturday. Westhill scored three first inning runs, which set the tone for a 10-1 win over Hannibal.

Westhill wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. By the end of the first inning, they had a 3-0 lead over Hannibal. During the bottom of the third inning, Hannibal responded with a run to cut Westhill’s lead down to two at 3-1.

Westhill quickly answered Hannibal’s response. Westhill scored two more runs during the bottom of the third inning to increase its lead to 5-1.
