Phoenix varsity softball coach steps down from post

by Rob Tetro

After eight seasons as head coach of the Phoenix varsity softball team, Casey Jones recently announced that he is stepping down.

In his tenure, Jones and the Lady Firebirds won three regular season division championships and last year’s sectional and regional Championship.

During the last five seasons, Phoenix was 94-32, which equates to a .770 win percentage. However, his impact goes beyond the sport. His players describe him as someone who not only encouraged them to have a strong work ethic but also a sense of unity and family.

Jones said his time at the helm of Phoenix softball as been an amazing ride. The Firebirds have had one of the more premiere softball teams in both the region and the state the last couple of seasons

However, Jones said he also understood the importance of being able to prepare his players for life beyond high school.

“It has been an unreal pleasure to have coached such super kids here in Phoenix,” Jones said.

Phoenix Athletic Director Jim Drancsak commended Jones for being able to turn Phoenix softball into a powerhouse in such a short amount of time.

Drancsak suggested that a key variable to Jones’ success at Phoenix has been his ability to consistently prepare his teams to compete both physically and mentally.
