Hannibal softball team showing strong resolve

by Rob Tetro

The Hannibal varsity softball team hasn’t had the season that it hoped it would have.

The adversity that the team has faced throughout the season might have bent them but in terms of effort, they are far from broken.

Chittenango delivered a crucial blow during the game’s later stages en route to a win April 26. Bishop Ludden topped the Lady Warriors in a shootout April 29 while Solvay asserted its dominance early and often in an impressive performance May 1.

The Lady Warriors concluded that five-game stretch with losses to Lansing (2-1) and St. Johnsville (9-1) in a doubleheader played May 4.

Chittenango got off to a decent start when it took on Hannibal. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead during the first inning, the Lady Bears added another run during the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Lady Warriors, Chittenango put the game out of reach during the sixth inning. The Lady Bears scored eight runs during the bottom of the sixth inning to cap off a 12-0 win over Hannibal.

The Lady Warriors were led by Kaylee Esposito and Samantha Bowers, who both had a hit.

On the mound, Adrienne Shortself pitched the entire game for Hannibal. She finished with two strikeouts while allowing 12 runs on 12 hits in six innings of work.

Bishop Ludden topped the Lady Warriors in a firework-filled game. After a scoreless first inning, Bishop Ludden scored six unanswered runs during the second and third innings.

Ludden refused to slow down during the fourth and fifth innings. During the next two innings, Bishop Ludden scored 11 more runs to expand its lead to 17-0.

Ludden capped it off by scoring six more runs during the top of the sixth inning to take a 23-0 lead.

However, Hannibal began to chip into the lead. During the final two innings of the game, Hannibal fired back with 10 runs of its own to cut into the deficit.

The deficit they faced proved to be far too much to overcome as Bishop Ludden came away with a 23-10 win.
