by Rob Tetro

The Hannibal varsity Football team faced an early 14-point deficit against Syracuse-IT during its game Saturday afternoon.

Yet, the Warriors maintained their resolve. They batted back to cut Syracuse-IT’s lead down to six points going into halftime.

As the battle continued into the second half, Hannibal rallied to take the lead. Unfortunately for the Warriors, a late score by Syracuse-IT helped them to come away with a 34-31 win over Hannibal.

The first quarter belonged to Syracuse-IT. The Eagles took a 7-0 lead when Manny Flowers found Wayne Jones for a touchdown pass from 25 yards out. Before the first quarter ended, Syracuse-IT struck again. Josh Thomas scored on a five-yard run to give Syracuse-IT a 14-0 lead.

The Warriors responded during the second quarter. They cut the lead to eight points at 14-6 when Brandon Burnett scored on a run from six yards out. Hannibal briefly tied the game at 14-following a 9 yard touchdown run by Tim Webber.

However, Syracuse-IT struck the final blow of the first half. The Eagles made the score 20-14 when Jones caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Flowers.

An exciting third quarter set the tone for what proved to be an electrifying conclusion to the contest.
