Hannibal baseball team defeats Solvay but loses to Westhill

The Hannibal varsity baseball team split games against Solvay and Westhill to begin the 2013 season.

Hannibal scored three of its four runs during the first three innings of the game en route to a 4-0 win over Solvay April 6.

Westhill, however, proved to be superior than Solvay. Westhill scored four of its five runs during the second and third innings April 9 to come away with a 5-1 win over Hannibal.

The Warriors scored a run in each of the first three innings against Solvay. While keeping Solvay off the scoreboard, Hannibal added another run during the top of the sixth inning to cap off the 4-0 shutout.

Four different players got hits for the Warriors. Jake Shortslef, Billy Cook, Matt Wagner and Matt Bogawitch all had hits against Solvay.

Greg Pitcher earned the win on the mound for Hannibal. He struck out five batters while giving up only one hit in four innings of work.

Jake Shortslef relieved Pitcher. Shortslef struck out five Solvay batters while giving up only two hits in three innings of play.

The Warriors didn’t see the outcome they hoped for when they took on Westhill.

Hannibal boys basketball goes 1-1 in last two games

The Hannibal boys varsity basketball team recently split games against Institute Of Technology Central and Jordan-Elbridge.

Hannibal outscored Institute of Technology Central 44-11 during the first and fourth quarters hold on for the win Jan. 31.

After a competitive first half, Jordan-Elbridge pulled away from Hannibal during the second half en route to the win Feb. 6.

In a game of runs, the Warriors held off Institute of Technology Central (5-12). Hannibal got off to a quick start to begin the game. By the end of the first quarter, the Warriors had jumped out to a 13-point lead.

Institute of Technology Central cut into the deficit during the second quarter. They outscored the Warriors by five points to bring the deficit down to eight points going into halftime.

Institute of Technology Central stormed ahead in impressive fashion during the third quarter. They outscored Hannibal by 14 points to pull ahead by six by the end of the quarter. Unfortunately for Institute of Technology Central, they had no answers for the Warriors down the stretch. Hannibal erupted to outscore Institute of Technology Central by 20 points during the fourth quarter to come away with a 71-57 win.

The Warriors were led by Jake Shortslef, who had 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Hannibal splits games against Skaneateles and Chittenango

The Hannibal boys varsity basketball team went 1-1 in games against Skaneateles and Chittenango last week.

Jan. 8, Skaneateles gradually cushioned its lead as the game went on to come away with a hard fought win.

However, the Warriors responded with an exciting win against Chittenango Jan. 11. Hannibal staged a furious fourth quarter rally to overcome a double digit lead to escape with a one-point win over Chittenango.

The Warriors got off to a decent start when they took on Skaneateles. By the end of the first quarter, Hannibal had built a three-point lead over Skaneateles.

Skaneateles, however, began to take over from there. The Lakers outscored the Warriors by four points during the second quarter to take a one-point lead into halftime at 24-23.

Hannibal shoved great resolve as the game went on. The Warriors were outscored by a point during the third quarter and faced a two-point deficit going into the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Skaneateles proved to be too much down the stretch. The Lakers outscored Hannibal by four points during the fourth quarter to come away with a 58-52 win.

The Warriors were led by Jake Shortslef, who scored 20 points. Following Shortslef was Billy Skipper with 16 points. Ryan Perry and Trevor Alton scored five points each while Jacob Schenko, Charlie McCraith and Sam McCraith combined to score six points for Hannibal.

Hannibal and Phoenix football players earn All-League honors

Section III recently recognized 69 Class C West football players and coaches for its All-League teams.

Fifteen of those honorees came from either the Phoenix or Hannibal football teams.

Avery Chisolm was the leading honoree for the Firebirds. The senior quarterback was recognized as an All-League First Team Offensive Player.

Also honored were Firebirds Tyler Hanna and Bruce Jones. The senior offensive linemen were acknowledged as All-League Second Team Offensive Players.

Senior Billy Cronk was recognized as an All-League Second Team Defensive Player.

Brandon Burnett was the leading honoree for the Warriors. The senior running back was acknowledged as an All-League First Team Offensive Player. Senior Jake Shortslef was also recognized as an All-League First Team Offensive Player.

Hannibal also featured five players who were acknowledged for their All-League Second Team efforts.
