Members of the Hannibal varsity football team knew they had their hands full when they traveled to Skaneateles Friday.
Despite being heavy underdogs, the Warriors hung tough with Skaneateles during the first half. Skaneateles, however, outscored the Warriors by 14 points to help the Lakers pull away for a 49-14 win.
Early in the first quarter, the Warriors took a 7-0 lead when quarterback Trevor Alton found Tim Webber on a wheel route along the left sideline for the 21-yard touchdown pass.
Skaneateles was quick to respond. The Lakers made the score 7-6 when Conor Herr threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jake Cooney. Skaneateles struck again before the first quarter ended. Max Weiss returned a Trevor Alton interception 30 yards for the score.
During the second quarter, Skaneateles began to add to its lead. The Lakers took a 21-7 lead when Max Weiss scored on a 77-yard run.
Skaneateles put together a solid third quarter to put the game away. Weiss scored on a run from 10 yards out.
However, Hannibal and its quarterback Trevor Alton were not finished. Alton found Jake Shortslef for a 68-yard touchdown pass. Alton’s second touchdown pass of the day cut Skaneateles’ lead down to 14 points at 28-14.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, it was all Skaneateles from here on out.
A 10-yard touchdown run by Weiss gave Skaneateles a 35-14 lead. The Lakers made the score 42-14 when Herr scored on a 31-yard touchdown run. Skaneateles added another touchdown during the fourth quarter, which capped off its 35-point win.
