Fulton to remember Jack Walsh

by Andrew Henderson

The late Jack Walsh, Fulton’s beloved Irish singer and a long time city clerk, will be remembered and honored next week with a plaque at city hall.

Walsh, who was city clerk from 1958 to 1985, died in June of last year at the age of 85.

Walsh, who is known for singing Irish songs, including

“Danny Boy,” was a member of the Hamer Sing-A-Long, a group that was started by Mary and Ernie Hamer to provide entertainment to community residents in nursing homes and at numerous celebrations.

Since his death, the Hamer Sing-A-Long group wanted to recognize and honor Walsh. After talking with Mayor Ron Woodward, the group proposed placing an appropriate plaque in his honor at city hall.

A brief ceremony will be held Thursday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. in the Community Room at city hall.

The ceremony will be attended by Walsh’s two sons, John and Hal; Steve Chirello, president of the Fulton Music Association; Carol Fox, director and conductor of the Fulton Community Band; Mayor Woodward; members of the Fulton Common Council; and members of the Hamer Sing-A-Long group.

Members of the public are invited to attend as well.

Fulton Community Band to hold Christmas concert

The sounds of the holiday season will once again be heard in Fulton as the Fulton Community Band will hold its annual free Christmas concert Sunday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. in the G. Ray Bodley High School auditorium.

The Fulton Community Band will be featured performing several new arrangements and old favorites, including Leroy Anderson’s “Christmas Festival,” the “Stars and Stripes for Christmas,” “A Jazzy Christmas,” “Santa Meets the Big Band,” and more.

The former Holy Family/St. Michaels Choir, under the direction of Dolores Walrath, will be also be singing in the concert.

“The band and choir will combine to perform ‘O Holy Night,’ as a tribute to the late Jack Walsh who passed away in June and traditionally sang this carol for decades and for every community Christmas concert,” said Steve Chirello, president of the Fulton Music Association.

“He was a community treasure and the recipient of the FMA’s 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award. “The evening will end with a rousing Christmas carol sing-along with the band, the choir, the Hamer Sing-a-long group and the audience,” Chirello added.
