Syracuse Academy of Science escapes with win over Phoenix

The Phoenix boys varsity basketball team lost a hard fought game to Syracuse Academy of Science Feb. 11.

Syracuse Academy Of Science built a 17-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. It was a deficit that took Phoenix two full quarters to recover from. Syracuse Academy Of Science, however, got it done down the stretch to come away with a 55-53 win.

Syracuse Academy Of Science (12-5) got off to a decent start. By the end of the first quarter, they had built a seven-point lead over Phoenix. The Firebirds cut into the deficit they faced during the second quarter. They outscored Syracuse Academy of Science by a point to trail 32-26 at halftime.

Phoenix rallied to tie the game during the third quarter. The Firebirds outscored Syracuse Academy of Science by six points to tie the game at 43-43 by the end of the quarter.

Syracuse Academy of Science outscored Phoenix during the fourth quarter. Syracuse Academy Of Science’ fourth quarter scoring advantage proved to be the difference in the game as it held off the Firebirds for the two-point win.

Leading the way for Phoenix were Dylan Doupe and Chris Vaverchak, who both scored 15 points. Kyle Huniford finished with nine points and Richard Howington chipped in eight points. Zach Sisera and Bryce Plante combined to score six points.

With the loss, Phoenix concludes the regular season with an overall record of 11-7 and a 9-6 record in division play.

Phoenix boys basketball team splits pair of games

The Phoenix Boys Varsity Basketball Team topped Chittenango but came up short against Westhill in games played in the last week.

Phoenix outscored Chittenango 35-15 during the second and fourth quarters to come away with a win Feb. 5.

In the Feb. 9 contest against Westhill, Phoenix lost to one of the premiere teams in all of New York State

Phoenix earned a hard fought win against Chittenango (3-14) in what proved to be a game of runs. Chittenango got off to a solid start. By the end of the first quarter, Chittenango had built an eight-point lead.

The Firebirds fought back during the second quarter. They outscored Chittenango by 14 points to take a six-point lead into halftime at 23-17.

Chittenango cut into the deficit they faced in half during the third quarter. They outscored Phoenix by three points to bring The Firebirds lead down to three points by the end of the quarter.

The Firebirds, however, put the game out of reach during the fourth quarter. They outscored Chittenango by six points to come away with a 51-42 win.

Dylan Doupe led Phoenix with 16 points while Richard Howington finished with 15 points. Zach Sisera added 13 points and Brian Sawyer, Chris Vaverchak and Kyle Huniford combined to score seven points for The Firebirds.

Up next for Phoenix was a matchup with league leading Westhill (16-2).

Phoenix basketball team wins two of three games

The Phoenix boys varsity basketball team recently won games against Jordan-Elbridge and Institute off Technology Central but fell to Skaneateles.

Phoenix outscored Jordan-Elbridge 36-14 during the second half of their Jan. 11 game en route to the 64-46 win.

The Firebirds kept it going against Institute of Technology Central Jan. 15. Phoenix rallied during the second half to overcome a first half deficit to pull away for the 60-49 win.

Unfortunately for the Firebirds, Skaneateles proved to be a little too much for them Jan. 18. Skaneateles was just a little more efficient during the second half as they escaped with a hard fought 62-58 win over Phoenix.

Leading the way for the Firebirds in the Jordan-Elbridge game was Chris Vaverchak, who scored 19 points. Richard Howington and Zach Sisera both scored 11 points and Dylan Doupe added eight points.

Brian Sawyer chipped in seven points while Kyle Huniford, Andrew Torres and Bryce Plante combined to score eight points for Phoenix.

In the Institute off Technology Central game, Phoenix was led by Doupe and Howington, who both scored 14 points. Sisera scored 11 points and Huniford chipped in 10 points. Vaverchak added seven points while Gino Mammoito and Sawyer scored two points.

In the Skaneateles game, Phoenix was led by Vaverchak and his 19 points. Avery Chisolm finished with 10 points, Sisera and Doupe each scored nine points, and Howington added six points.

Huniford and Sawyer combined to score six points for The Firebirds.

Phoenix boys basketball team splits first two games of 2013

The Phoenix boys varsity basketball team recently split games against Chittenango and Westhill.

Following a third-quarter rally during its Jan. 3 game, Phoenix held on for a hard fought win over Chittenango.

The Firebirds weren’t as lucky when they took on Westhill Jan. 8. This time around, Westhill pulled away during the third quarter en route to the win.

After a competitive first quarter, the Firebirds led Chittenango by only two points. However, Chittenango tied the game during the second quarter, outscoring Phoenix by two points for a 23-23 halftime tie. The Firebirds went on a pivotal run during the third quarter. By the end of the third quarter, Phoenix had jumped out a six-point lead.

Chittenango wasn’t going to go down quietly. The Bears outscored Phoenix by four points during the third quarter to cut the Firebirds’ lead down to two points.

The deficit the Bears faced proved to be too much to overcome as Phoenix held on for a 46-44 win.

The Firebirds were led by Dylan Doupe, who scored 15 points, and Chris Vaverchak, who scored 13 points.
