Fulton senior swimmers leave mark on program

by Rob Tetro

With the recent conclusion of their season, the Fulton varsity swimming team said farewell to three seniors.

Janelle Tallents, Courtney Beckwith and Steven Hanczyk have all taken part in their final events as part of the high school program. Coach Raina Hinman said it worked to everyone’s advantage to have a varsity team with both genders. Tallents and Beckwith held their own against the boys.

Hinman credited their success to the determination and work ethic that all three seniors displayed. Their efforts were consistently impressive both in preparation and during meets, she said.

Tallents and Beckwith’s efforts have served as motivation for the other girls on the team. However, Hinman pointed out that her team prepares to succeed against other schools by competing with each other.

“They all work hard and challenge each other,” Hinman said.

As Tallents, Beckwith and Hanczyk prepare for life beyond high school, Hinman hopes that being a part of the swimming program has helped them to understand that having a strong work ethic can lead to success.

Tallents, Beckwith and Hanczyk concluded their Fulton Swimming Careers while taking part in the Class B Sectional Championships Feb. 14.

In the 50-yard freestyle event, Beckwith and Hanczyk came in 10th and 11th place with times of 0:25.85 and 0:25.86, respectively.

In the one-meter diving event, Hanczyk earned a fourth place finish with a score of 379.45.

Tallents came in 16th place in the 100-yard butterfly event with a time of 1:11.83.

The Fulton girls varsity soccer team moved on to the semifinals of the Section III Class A playoffs after winning a thriller against Indian River Friday.

In a defensive battle, the Lady Raiders scored the game’s only goal during the second half en route to a 1-0 win over Indian River.

The Lady Raiders’ second-half goal by Katelyn Caza was all that Fulton needed to secure the win. Caza’s goal was assisted by Courtney Beckwith.

Gaolie Allyson Bricker saved all 4 of Indian River’s shots on goal.

With the win, Fulton’s record improves to 11-4-2 overall. The Lady Raiders were scheduled to compete against top seeded Whitesboro in Chittenango Tuesday.

A win against Whitesboro would allow Fulton the opportunity to play for the Class A championship against either Jamesville-DeWitt or Camden Nov. 1 in Chittenango.

The Lady Raiders took on Christian Brothers Academy Tuesday. In the end, the game concluded in a 2-2 tie.

After a scoreless first half, both teams scored a goal during the second half to force the game into overtime.

During the first overtime session, each team added another goal to force a second overtime session.

After neither team was able to score during the second overtime session, the game concluded with a 2-2 tie.

The Lady Raiders were led by Courtney Beckwith and Jocelyn Ravesi, who both scored goals. Sarah Halstead recorded an assist in the game.

Goalies Hannah Geitner and Bricker combined to save 18 shots on goal.

After regulation and an overtime session, Fulton’s rematch with Jamesville-DeWitt ended in a 0-0 tie.

Goalie Robert Borrow saved all six shots on goal.

The Red Raiders’ game against Christian Brothers Academy Tuesday was another game in which Fulton was seeking retribution.
