What’s happening at CNY Arts Center?

A new month brings lots of weekend events, starting with the very first Saturday of the month. June 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., an open house for our new gallery “Arts in the Heart” located at 47 S. First St., Fulton. Come visit, take a walk through, enjoy Marcella Slater on the harp from 2 to 4 p.m.; see the display of some of the finest art in the heart of CNY. Get a free “ARTs in the HeART” bracelet while supplies last. The public is also invited to the official Ribbon Cutting set for June 5 at 11 a.m. just before Tunes in June.

We’ll also be open during Farmer’s Market every Saturday so stop by when you’re at the market, on your lunch hour during the week or whenever you’re downtown.

Make time to see what’s new at Arts in the HeART Gallery open Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hours are subject to change.

The second Saturday finds the third annual Arts Fest June 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the War Memorial Community Center Ice Rink. This annual event is growing in popularity each year. Crafters and artists, entertainment, a talent competition, art projects for kids, food, prizes, and family fun. With more 50 vendors to browse, this event will offer the best local handmade original art and crafts. Make it a day to celebrate the arts in CNY.

We still need performers for the talent competition to be held during Arts Fest from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Butler-Sheehan Irish Step Dancers are scheduled to perform during judges deliberations.

Lois Dixon and the Olives and Tom Eagan will each perform onstage following the Competition which awards prizes in three age categories plus a new category for bands just added. And there is still room for vendors. Talent and vendors can register online at www.CNYArtsCenter.com.

Our focus is on kids the third Saturday, June 15 from noon to 2 p.m. with sign-up for our summer play “Charlotte’s Web.” The play is open to all children from ages 5-15 and we’ll find a part for everyone. There is no charge to participate.

The play will run Aug. 16-18 at the Arts Center located in the 357 State Street church. Children should be prepared to tell their favorite story or sing a song. For more information visit www.CNYArtsCenter.com or call 592-3373.

Digital Photography 101 series kicks off our class schedule June 4 and you can attend any or all of the six classes meeting on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Learn the basics of taking photographs with a digital camera. A single lens reflex (SLR) digital camera is recommended, but not required. The class is taught by Kendra Matott, studio arts coordinator and Featured Artist of the Month at Arts in the HeART Gallery.

Sunday, June 9 brings our monthly Writer’s Café from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the center. This informal gathering for local writers and people who enjoy writing is the perfect place to share your writings and enjoy the work of others like yourself. All genres welcome. Three great classes are on the calendar for Saturday, June 15 with Woodworking for Beginners, ages 10 and up from 1 to 5 p.m. Students will make a flower box and learn about proper tool safety and woodworking techniques. All materials and tools are provided.

Textured Memories with Kenneth Blount will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You’re going to love this one using things around the house…a child’s toy, a favorite cup/spoon, a treasured memory that becomes a treasured work of art bringing back memories for years to come. Bring items to make a collage. Please pre-register.

Oil Painting with Bonnie McClellan returns from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This class will paint “Abandoned Cabin” full of colors! All materials are provided and students will leave with a completed painting.

CNY Arts Center rounds out January with a full day of classes for a variety of arts.

The center will be hopping with activity Jan. 26 starting with Diane Sokolowski’s Create with Crescent Rolls from 9 a.m. to noon where students will learn to make three desserts and three hors d’ouerves with crescent rolls. Students must pre-register for this class; no walk-ins are permitted so the instructor can provide adequate materials for pre-registered students.

Also Jan. 26, Oil Painting from 10 a.m.- to 1 p.m. and Jewelry Making from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. with artist Bonnie McClellan offers a full day of creative fun. Take home your very own original oil painting and handmade jewelry piece!

Jan. 26 is also the date for a special writing workshop with guest author Susan Peterson Gateley that will help answer the question “Is Self-Publishing for You?” from 1 to 4 p.m. with discussion and Q&A. The workshop will cover self-publishing basics.

Artist Café returns Jan. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. This informal event is open to local artists to bring their portfolio to share, meet other artists of all skill levels, mediums, and interests and exchange ideas and feedback.

The fun continues with Auditions for the play “Helen Keller” Jan. 29 and 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Feb. 2 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

January Artist Spotlight will feature a recurring Arts Center instructor Bonnie McClellan, Jan. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. McClellan will share her technique and discuss her journey as an artist. She will be teaching again Feb. 2. Oil Painting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Ink Drawing from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Those attending the Artist Spotlight will get a preview of those classes and be able to register at that time. The public is invited to attend.

• Saturday Writers’ Club Nov. 17 from 1 to 5 p.m. for ages 8-15 with Karen Burke and Jim Farfaglia. This club is for young people who like to write. Each month the instructors will offer young writers a place to learn writing skills, practice them and share their efforts with others. The club will also feature guest speakers and announce events, contests and opportunities for young writers. Students are eligible to attend one time or every month!

• Launching Your Writing Journey Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Carolyn Dougherty. In this one-day class for beginning writers, we will discuss how to identify and set specific goals for projects, build confidence by reviewing basic elements of writing, and share tips to stay motivated throughout the entire writing process. Pre-registration is required.

• Oil Painting Workshop Saturday, Nov. 20 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. with Bonnie McClellan. “Soaring Eagle” Wet on wet technique, landscapes, step by step instruction in group setting start with a blank canvas, walk out with your very own painting. Wear old clothes, smock or apron. It is a four-hour workshop with all materials provided. Pre-registration is required.

• Ink Drawing Nov. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. with Bonnie McClellan. Learn different styles use, techniques, working with different papers and pens, brushes, adding color, drawing subjects are student’s choice. Pre-registration is required.

• Kids Day Out Saturday, Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Child care while you shop. There will be arts and crafts, story time, games. Qualified adults are always in charge. Please provide snack and/or lunch for your child.

• Artist Cafe Nov. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. for those 18 years and older. Join the growing artist community at this event designed to get artists together for the love of art! Bring your portfolio to share, meet other artists of all skill levels, mediums and interests, exchange ideas and feedback and just enjoy talking with other artists. Refreshments will be available for purchase, hot beverages, cookies and other pastries.

• Artist Spotlight Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. This monthly event will feature the work of a local artist who will then teach a class at the arts center in the following month. Mixed Media Artist Kendra Matott kicks off this new program with an exhibit and presentation on her style, technique and unique art. Kendra will teach a class in January. There is no charge for this event and refreshments will be provided.

• Writing Your Holiday Gift Fridays, Nov. 30, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. with Jim Farfaglia. During the busy holiday season why not take some time to create your loved ones a special gift of your writing. This class will help you select an appropriate topic and writing form (memoir, poetry, fiction, etc), then will guide you through the process of creating your finished gift. No previous writing experience is necessary.
