Ann Mahaney was named the Hannibal Free Library’s Woman of the Year during a ceremony Saturday at the Community Center in Hannibal.

Librarian Shelly Stanton started the tradition five years ago as a way of recognizing outstanding women in the community.

“I thought it would be a nice way to honor someone and it ties in perfectly with Women’s History Month,” said Stanton.

Mahaney grew up in Hannibal and attended school local schools. She is a teaching assistant at Oswego County BOCES.

She and her husband, Dan, have a daughter Kara, who is now a dancer in New York City.

While she was growing up, Mahaney began volunteering at Kara’s activities.

“I helped out with whatever my daughter was involved in like nursery school, Girl Scouts and I volunteered at our church,” she said.

She is now a member of the Hannibal Historical Society, Friends of the Library and the Community Park Committee. She also chaired the Winter Fest this year.

When presenting Mahaney with a Certificate of Recognition from the Oswego County Legislature, Legislator Terry Wilbur said, “We’d all like to thank Ann for her participation in various organizations — and I say various because the list just goes on and on.”

Hannibal Mayor Fred Kent added, “For as long as I’ve been mayor, Ann has been volunteering and heading up committees, always giving generously of her time.”
