A bill that would help Oswego County and its inmate crunch at the Oswego County Correctional Facility has been approved by a key Senate committee this week, said state Senator Patty Ritchie.

The New York State Senate’s Crime and Corrections Committee approved the bill, S.5498, which would require payment to the counties for any state inmates who are held in a county jail beyond 10 days.

“Taxpayers in Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties are being forced to foot the bill for inmates who are being held in county jails, but who really belong in state lock-ups,” Ritchie said.

Every March, my parents and my wife and I take part in an activity that surely signals the coming of spring — the madness that is found throughout the land of college basketball.

Yes, it’s bracket time.

The NCAA kicked off its annual tournament last week and with it comes millions of people partaking in office pools and online/internet contests.

Search warrant executed on suspected New Haven meth lab

The Oswego County Drug Task Force — with the assistance of the New York State Police, Fulton Police Department, Oswego Police Department and the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department — executed a search warrant last week at 3882 Co. Rte. 6 in the Town of New Haven.

The search warrant was for the home of Brian J. Lamond and Stephanie A. Holt-Ostrander for a reported methamphetamine lab.

The search resulted in the recovery of several items of evidence that are related to the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Lamond and Ostrander were both charged with third-degree unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine, a class D felony. They were both arraigned in Fulton City Court by acting Oswego County Court Judge Spencer J. Ludington and were remanded to the Oswego County Correctional Facility until their next court appearance in the Town of New Haven Court March 16.
