The Phoenix girls varsity basketball team lost to Bishop Grimes and Marcellus last week.
Bishop Grimes outscored Phoenix 30-8 during the second and third quarters of their Jan. 24 game to come way with the win.
Unfortunately for the Lady Firebirds, it didn’t get any easier when they took on Marcellus Jan. 29.
After being outscored by Phoenix during the first quarter, Marcellus cruised to the win after outscoring the Lady Firebirds 49-21 the rest of the way.
Aiming for an upset, Phoenix had a two-point lead over Bishop Grimes following a competitive first quarter. However, Bishop Grimes stormed ahead during the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Firebirds by five points to take a three-point lead into halftime at 16-13.
Bishop Grimes began to pull away from Phoenix during the third quarter and built a 20-point lead by the end of the quarter.
Despite facing the large deficit, Phoenix refused to quit as it rallied to cut into Bishop Grimes’ lead during the fourth quarter.
The lead proved to be too much to overcome as Bishop Grimes came away with a 45-32 win.
Leading the way for Phoenix was Meghan Barry and Katherine Oliver, who both scored 10 points. Justice Mills followed with six points while Sydney Patzke chipped in three points for the Lady Firebirds.
The competition didn’t ease up any when Phoenix took on Marcellus.
The Lady Firebirds got off to a decent start, building a three-point lead over Marcellus by the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately for Phoenix, Marcellus began to take charge during the second quarter. Marcellus took a 22-17 halftime lead.
Marcellus refused to let up during the third quarter. The Mustangs outscored Phoenix by 11 points to extend their lead to 16 points.
During the fourth quarter, Marcellus outscored the Lady Firebirds by nine points to cap off a 55-30 win.
