‘Book It!’ event planned for Phoenix library

“Book It!” is a 2.5-mile family fun walk event to benefit the Phoenix Public Library’s Summer Reading Program.

This event is the brain child of Elizabeth Russell, a member of the JCB High School Honor Society, a long time volunteer at the library, and a supporter of the Summer Reading Program.

“Book It!” will be held Saturday, June 16. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Phoenix Public Library, located at 34 Elm St.

There is a donation per walker with all proceeds to benefit the Summer Reading Program.

The walk itself will be a 2.5-mile loop in the village beginning and ending at the Phoenix Public Library.

Phoenix receives grant for concert series

The Village of Phoenix has been awarded $1,000 from the Cultural Resources Council under the 2012 Community Arts Grants Program.

In addition to the Village of Phoenix, 70 other not-for-profit organizations and nine regional artists will share $120,000 for community-based cultural projects in Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties.

Community Arts Grants were awarded with funds from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Tyler Doupe and Kenneth Roffo received the Phoenix Youth of the Year Award during the 2012 President’s Youth Service Awards Ceremony held recently at VFW Post 5540.

Doupe volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters and is also involved in the bullying mentor program.

Roffo is a Boy Scout and as part of his Eagle project, laid a concrete pad at Henley Park for picnic tables.’

Section III softball was a part of the first-ever softball to be played  in the
Carrier Dome at Syracuse University.

Twelve teams, including the Phoenix and Oswego varsity softball teams, tookpart in scrimmages  March 23 and 24.

The games were sandwiched between college games by Syracuse University, Colgate and Canisius. There was even  a little league game.

The Phoenix team scrimmaged against Cazenovia while the Oswego team scrimmaged against Liverpool and Caravel, a team from Delaware.

 

Head Start enrollment begins in Phoenix

Head Start Pre-K is accepting enrollment applications for the 2012-2013 school year.

In the Phoenix School District, Head Start Pre-K is held at Discovery Day Care and offers four- and six-hour class sessions.

The program’s goal is promoting school readiness through hands-on learning experiences, active play, and nutritious meals and snacks.

Fulton's Nick Woodworth received the Division One Exceptional Senior Award for this past season. Woodworth finished his final year with a record of 34-4.

Last weekend, the Friends of Section 3 Wrestling held its fourth annual banquet honoring the best wrestlers in Central New York for the 2011-2012 year.

Fulton Senior Nick Woodworth (160 pounds) was selected as the recipient for the Division One Exceptional Senior Award for this past season.

Woodworth finished his final year with a record of 34-4.

Overall, he was 107-37 for his high school career with 63 pins. He was also a two-time Section 3 champion.

Senior Tyler Button (145 pounds), senior Austyn Hayes (195 pounds) and junior Nick Tighe (126 pounds) of the Phoenix Firebirds were also honored at the Friends of Section 3 Wrestling Banquet for their outstanding accomplishments this past season.

Phoenix boys indoor track team ready for outdoor season

It was a successful season for the Phoenix boys varsity indoor track and field team.
In league competition, Phoenix earned a second-place finish behind Jamesville-Dewitt.

This season, Firebird runners set six shool records while several runners earned All-League Awards and took part in both league championship and sectional meets.
Jeff Wells, Will Miller, Jason Czyz, Bryce Ferris, Brandon Halstead and Mike Leach were the runners who set school records this season.
