Fulton administrator named Advocate of the Year

The 2014 Administrator Advocate of the Year Award was presented by the Oswego County BOCES School Library System, to Stephanie Maturo, director of technology in the Fulton school district. The Oswego County BOCES School Library System named Stephanie Maturo the 2014 Administrator Advocate of the Year in a ceremony May 13. 

The award was created to honor a library advocate in an administrative position in an educational setting who has demonstrated innovative administrative initiatives in the area of school libraries and librarianship.

More than 1,600 graduate from SUNY Oswego

SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley addresses graduation candidates of Oswego’s School of Education on Saturday, in the third of three sessions of commencement at the Campus Center arena and convocation hall. Seated in the red robe, Dr. Linda Clement, 1971 alumna of SUNY Oswego and vice president of student affairs at University of Maryland, served as commencement speaker for education. As the college conferred degrees on more than 1,600 undergraduates and master’s candidates, Peter Bocko, class of 1975 and chief technology officer for Corning Inc.’s Glass Technologies Group, spoke at commencement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Mark Baum, a 1981 Oswego graduate and senior vice president of industry relations and chief collaboration officer for the Food Marketing Institute, addressed candidates in the School of Business and the School of Communication, Media and the Arts. Phoenix team striking out cancer

The Phoenix Lady Firebird’s “Strikeout Cancer” pitch tally climbed to 100 following a nine to eight win over Bishop Ludden on Tuesday. Varsity Softball Pitcher Megan Brown and her teammates are playing with a mission this season, the mission is to strikeout pediatric cancer and support Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital Cancer Center. Several donors have sponsored Brown and the team’s “Strikeout Cancer” campaign, pledging a per strikeout donation to the campaign. Brown, center, is pictured above with her two catchers, Alicia Midlar, left, and Isabella Garofalo following the team’s recent win and 100th strikeout of the season.

Meet the Fulton school board candidates

Four seats are open on the Fulton City School District Board of Education. There are five candidates:

Incumbent Barbara Hubbard, Timothy Crandell, incumbent David Cordone, Pamela Parker and Robert Briggs.

The four persons receiving the most votes during the May 20 election will serve three-year terms beginning in July.

From high school to college, this senior artist has big plans.

Abigail Shatrau, named by CNY Arts Center at its Student Artist of the Month, is now 18 and almost ready to go out in the world. But life started out a bit different from what her future plans are.

Born and raised in Fulton, Shatrau has grown from crazy noodle art, glitter and glue, Lego building, paper people building and much more to a wonderful artist.   Continue reading
