Third-graders at Fairley Elementary School learned about various countries at a Cultural Fair June 5. Students and their families sampled food from foreign countries and students wrote reports about a specific country’s history, language, celebrations and national sport. Former professional wrestler-turned-motivational speaker Marc Mero used his wealth of life experience to inspire Dennis M. Kenney Middle School students during an assembly May 30.

Mero, who gained notoriety as a wrestler with the World Wrestling Federation in the early 1990s and later struggled with addiction and adversity, brought his message of hope to Hannibal students.  Continue reading

Birdlebough students exhibit at GENIUS Olympiad

John C. Birdlebough High School earth science honors students earned awards at the Regional GENIUS Olympiad in April. Shane Girard, left, earned second place for his research project about the impact of melting ice caps on the environment. The pair of Nicholas Bernard, middle, and Jonathan George earned first place for their research project entitled “How Does Climate Change Impact the Cryosphere?” This first place finish earned the pair an invitation to compete in the International GENIUS Olympiad at SUNY Oswego June 15 through 20. Two students from John C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix are headed to the international GENIUS Olympiad, held June 15-20 at SUNY Oswego. The GENIUS Olympiad is a competition for high school students in the areas of science, art, design, writing and music.

Nicholas Bernard and Jonathan George, both ninth-graders in Susan Sharp’s earth science honors class, will present their research project “How Does Climate Change Impact the Cryosphere?” at the competition, which will host about 600 students from more than 50 countries. Continue reading

An inaugural Earth Science Research Symposium at Phoenix’s John C. Birdlebough High School featured the research of 42 students from the school’s freshman class.

Earth science honors students from Susan Sharp and Andrea Ackles’ classes started tackling their research project assignments for the symposium back in early October.  Continue reading

Oswego High Athletes of the Month named

FitzGibbons Insurance owner John FitzGibbons  sponsors the “FitzGibbons Insurance Athletes of the Month”, in cooperation with the Oswego Buccaneer Booster Club and local businesses.  The April and May Oswego High School “Athletes of the Month” were  recognized recently. FitzGibbons was joined by Ryan Martin (lacrosse), Grace Gilbert (track),  Ontario Orchard’s Laurie Oleyourryk, Whitney Daino (softball), Alex Kemper (tennis) and  Buc Booster President Judy Queale-Dunsmoor. Each received a $25 gift certificate for Ontario Orchards.
