Oswego County finally posted an unemployment rate in single digits during the month of April.
The county’s jobless rate for April came in at 7.6 percent, a marked improvement over the 10 percent from February.
Still, Oswego County has one of the highest rates in the state. Only the Bronx at 10.3 percent, Essex at 8.2, Hamilton at 8.8, Jefferson at 8.2, Lewis at 8.7 and St. Lawrence at 7.7 have rate higher than Oswego’s. Continue reading
The Fulton Veterans’ Council will host a Memorial Day ceremony starting at 9 a.m. Monday, May 26, at St. Mary’s cemetery and continuing on to different memorials.

The Oswego County Office for the Aging will host an Energy Efficiency Improvement Seminar for seniors from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, May 30 at the Oswego County Health Department Building located at 70 Bunner St., Oswego.
Guest speakers from Peace Inc., EMPOWER and Rural Development will present information on programs that are available to help make homes more energy efficient.
“This past winter has been an energy and financial drain on residents of Oswego County as well as across the United States,” said Sara Sunday, administrator of the Office for the Aging. “By bringing these representatives together to inform our seniors of what is available to help winterize and make their homes more energy efficient, the Office for the Aging hopes to help one of our most vulnerable populations save limited resources.”
Those interested in attending may reserve a seat by contacting the Office for the Aging at 349-3484, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Harborfest is seeking volunteers for the July festival.
Each year, more than 400 volunteers are needed to put on the four-day, admission free festival. There are a variety of positions available, from trolley hosts to children’s activities assistants to merchandise assistants — there is something for everyone.
“Harborfest is a great opportunity to give back to the community by giving your time,” said Marta Santiago, a member of the Harborfest board of directors.
The festival is also looking for new park managers. If you would like to be a park manager, please indicate so on your volunteer application. There will be a screening and interview process conducted for all those interested.
Previous volunteers will be receiving applications in the mail within the next week.
If you have not volunteered before, applications are available on the Harborfest website, www.oswegoharborfest.com, or by stopping in the Harborfest offices in the McCrobie Building at 41 Lake St., Oswego.

Make a fashionable spring/summer bag in a class offered from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Monday June 2 at Lakeside Artisans, 191 W. First St., Owego.
Instructor Kathy Fenlon will guide students in selecting fabric to design their own unique bag. There is a limit of four students per class.
Students will select from a variety of gorgeous fabric and make the bag in class. The bag includes an easy way to install a zipper. These bags make great gifts!
Students may bring their own portable sewing machine if they have one. A machine will be provided for students who do not have one to bring. General knowledge of operating a sewing machine is helpful — the sewing is easy and basic.
