Virginia Simmons, telephone operator

OBITS-SimmonsVirginiaVirginia M. Simmons, 85, of Hannibal, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

A native of Minetto, she was a life resident of the Hannibal and Oswego areas. She had worked as a telephone operator for Oswego County Telephone Company in Fulton.

She was known by her family and friends as “Aunt Gina” and was loved by her family, grandchildren and the many children who she watched and nurtured over the years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Paul C. Simmons, in 2010. Surviving are her children, Nancy (Keith) Kyle and David (Bethany) Simmons, all of Hannibal; a brother, Mack (Mary) Stock of Hannibal; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 6 at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton with services 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Oswego Town Rural Cemetery in the spring.

Eleanor Malone, Dad’s Diner manager

OBITS-MaloneEleanorEleanor C. Patane Malone, 87, of Hannibal and The Manor at Seneca Hill, died peacefully Tuesday, March 26, 2013.

She was born Nov. 14, 1925 to the late Vincenzo and Rosa (Delpoplo) Patane. Many knew Mrs. Malone as the manager of Dad’s Diner in Hannibal for 25 years.

She was predeceased by sisters, Mary Barone and Santa Testa, and brothers, Joseph, James, Sam and Myron Patane.

Surviving are her children, Francis Malone of Orange City, Calif., Ken (Darleen) Malone of Hannibal, Rose (David) McMillen of Hannibal, Ellen (George) Sherman of Weedsport, Catherine (Phillip) Fadden of Rockford, Ill., Theresa (Douglas Bower) King of Hannibal, and Lynn (Dave) Bullard of Fulton; brother, Frank Patane of Hannibal, sister, Agnes Barone of Cicero; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation is from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 6 at Foster Funeral Home, 837 Cayuga St., Hannibal, with services immediately following.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fulton at a future date.

Lorraine Pokalsky, Phoenix resident

Lorraine Frances Pokalsky, 79, of Phoenix, died Monday, April 1, 2013 at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse.

She was born May 11, 1933 in Eynon, Pa. to her late parents, Anna (Wojciechowski) and Thomas Chervinak.

She was a homemaker and worked for Fleming Realtor for 10 years. She was a faithful parishioner at St. Stephen’s Church, Phoenix, and belonged to the Altar Rosary Society. She was a member of the Book Club at Phoenix Public Library.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene J. Pokalsky Sr., in 1997, and a son, Karl Pokalsky, in 1989.

Surviving are her daughter, Nanette Pokalsky (Robert Painting) of Holley, N.Y.; her two sons, Kenneth (Wendy) Pokalsky and Eugene J. Pokalsky Jr., all of Saratoga Springs; her brother, Gerald Chervinak of Dickson City, Pa.; five grandchildren, Thomas Pokalsky, Maggie Pokalsky, and Carrie Pokalsky, Christopher Painting, and Justin Painting; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held April 6 at 9:30 a.m. in Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home, Phoenix, followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen’s Church, 469 Main St., Phoenix

Burial will later in the Spring in Phoenix Rural Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 5 in the funeral home, 431 Main St., Phoenix.

Dawn Drought, Fulton resident

Dawn M. Drought, 54, of Fulton, died suddenly Thursday, March 28, 2013 at home.

She was predeceased by her mother, Arlene Berry Drought in 2001.

Surviving are her father, Herbert Drought of Fulton; sister, Debbie (Jim) Rogalavich of Liverpool; uncle, Royce (Jeanette) Drought of Camden; aunts, Lenora Drought of Amboy Center and Lorena Wright of Candor; and several cousins.

Calling hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street in Fulton with services immediately following.

Interment will be in Fairdale Rural Cemetery, Hannibal at a future date.

Joseph McCarthy, Oswego resident

OBITS-McCarthyJosephJoseph “Joe Joe Man” McCarthy, 19 of Oswego, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013.

He had attended Oswego High School, was an avid basketball player, and also loved playing football with his friends. He loved music, especially the Beatles and Avenged Seven Fold. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He was predeceased by his grandfather, Ronald Graham and grandmother, Shirley Scharf McCarthy.

He is survived by his parents, Faith Lynn (Graham) and Timothy McCarthy, Jr.; brothers, Derek Michael (Cara) Schute and Hunter James McCarthy; maternal grandparents, Bonnie (Russell) Keene; paternal grandfather, Timothy McCarthy Sr.; nieces, Aiyana and Aiyva; aunts, Bobbi (Matt) Norton, Andrea (Harry) Bickford and Michelle Waldron; and cousins, Corey, Shania, Chantel, Brooke, Nicole and Briana.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4 at Foster Funeral Home, 837 Cayuga St., Hannibal. There are no funeral services.

Mary Bzdula, Fulton resident

Mary Bzdula, 81, of Fulton, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Michaud Residential Health Services in Fulton.

Born in Phoenix, she had lived most of her adult life in Fulton. She was a communicant of The Church of the Immaculate Conception.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Bzdula, Sr.; son, Joseph A. Bzdula, Jr. of Phoenix; and sisters, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, corners of South Third and Rochester streets, Fulton. There are no calling hours.

Foster Funeral Home, Fulton has care of arrangements.

Barbara Neadle, born in Phoenix

OBITS-NeadleBarbaraBarbara Jean Neadle, 81, a longtime resident of Phoenix and Fulton, died Friday March 29, 2013.

She was born to her late parents, Frances Mason Potts and Caleb H. Potts June 15, 1931 in Phoenix. She attended Phoenix school and later became a homemaker.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick J. Neadle Sr.; a brother, Donald Potts; and three sisters, Dorothy M. Ylitalo, Vivian F. Potts, and Nancy Potts.

Surviving are her son, Frederick J. Neadle, Jr. and his wife, Simodosea of Syracuse; three sisters, Eleanor A. Sedner of Fulton, Wilma K. Sedner of Madison, Va., and Joyce N. Patterson of Fulton; two brothers, Francis “Ralph” Potts of Central Square, and Leonard James Potts of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; four grandchildren, Laurence, Emily, Gillian, and Cora; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held April 2 in Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Homes followed by a funeral mass in St. Stephen’s Church, both in Phoenix. Burial will be later in the spring in Pennellville Cemetery, County Route 54, Pennellville. Calling hours will be held today, April 1.

Richard Blake, Hannibal resident

OBITS-BlakeRichardRichard E. Blake, 72, of Hannibal, died peacefully Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at his home.

He had owned and operated a farm and logging business for many years. He was an award-winning tractor pull competitor, participating in many central New York events. He collected, owned and was proud of his 12 Minneapolis Moline tractors.

He was the son of the late Ernest and Charlotte (McGlen) Blake and was predeceased by a son, Brian Blake and step-children, Roberta Baldwin and Vicki Sharp.

Surviving are his longtime companion, Dorothy Cooper of Hannibal; children, Amanda Blake and Dylan Blake of Hannibal; granddaughter, Annaleigh; step-children, Cathy Bullock of Honeoye Falls, Barbara Griffith of Port Byron, Gary (Diane) Cooper of Oswego, Steven (Tela) Cooper of Port Byron and Shari (Oliver) VanHorn of Cato; siblings, Diane (Ray) DuBois of Prattsburgh, Barbara Green of Phoenix, Marlene Robinson of Oswego, Jerry (Donna) Blake of Hannibal and Christine (David) Wolford of Fulton; and many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. today, April 1 at Foster Funeral Home, 837 Cayuga Street in Hannibal. Interment will be in the spring at Hannibal Village Cemetery.
