Stella Shambo: Worked at Sealright 24 years

Stella Shambo, 97, of Fulton, passed away Aug. 19 at Michaud Residential Health Services.

She had worked at Sealright Co. in Fulton for 24 years.

Stella was a communicant of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Fulton and member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Fulton Polish Home.

Stella was predeceased by her husband, Mitchell Shambo, in 1974; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Shambo; sisters, Wanda Masters, Isabel Garba, Gladys Markot, Jennie Ciesla and Evelyn Benis.

Surviving are her two children, Joyce (Robert) Lee and Charles “Beaver” (Sandra Tarnelli) Shambo, both of Fulton; two grandchildren, Michael (Kelli) Shambo of Wake Forest, N.C., and Mary (Jon) Santoro of Apex, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Nicholas Santoro, and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were Aug. 22 at Foster Funeral Home, Fulton. A Mass of Christian Burial was Aug. 23 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fulton.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fulton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fulton Polish Home Scholarship Fund, 153 W. First St., Fulton, NY 13069.

The family will miss her and keep her close in their memory with love forever.

Kathleen Mathews: Retired teacher in Marcy

Kathleen “Kay” Mathews, 97, of Marcy died Aug. 19 at Oswego Hospital.

She was born in Glenboro, Manitoba Canada, the daughter of the late Ernest and Maude Walley, and was a resident of Marcy most of her life.

Mrs. Mathews was a retired teacher at Crane Hill School in Marcy.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Mathews, in 1986.

She is survived by her children Kathleen (Richard) Marrazzo of Barneveld, Laura (Lou) Angelina of Oswego, Marianne Mathews of Oxford, her brother Ernest Walley of Birtle, Manitoba Canada, eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the family’s convenience. The arrangements are in the care of Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home, Oswego.

Anne S. Gunn: Fulton resident since 2000

Anne S. Gunn, 74, of Fulton died Aug. 17 at Seneca Hill Manor, Volney, after a long illness.

Mrs. Gunn was born in Syracuse to the late Howard and Bernice (Stevens) Smith.

She was an Oswego resident for 18 years until moving to Fulton in 2000.

Mrs. Gunn is survived by her husband of 54 years, William “Peter” Gunn of Fulton; four children,  James Gunn of Fulton, Suzanne Taylor of Fulton, Lisa Gentile of Oswego and Peter Gunn of California; siblings Raymond Smith of East Syracuse and Ruth Clark of Syracuse; nine grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were Aug. 21 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Oswego, where a mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the Rev. John Smegelsky.  Burial will be held privately.

The Sugar Funeral Home Inc., Fulton has care of the arrangements.

Dorothy Carter: Worked 40 years at Nestle

Dorothy Carter, 89, of Fulton, passed away peacefully Aug. 15 at the Syracuse Home in Baldwinsville.

Born in Hannibal, she lived in the Fulton – Hannibal area all her life.  Mrs. Carter retired from Nestle Co., Fulton, after 40 years of service.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Harry Bernard, who died in 1981; her second husband, Charles D. Carter, who died in 1997; two sisters, Alice Sheldon in 2010 and Marjorie Dunsmoor who died in 2002.

Mrs. Carter is survived by a brother, Frederick Scott of Honeoye Falls; five step-children; several nieces and nephews; grand-niece, Melanie Blasczieski of Fulton; a grand-nephew, John Millen of Baldwinsville.

Graveside services were Aug. 23 at Hannibal Village Cemetery.

Henri J. Gilbert: Hannibal business owner

Henri J. Gilbert, 84, of Hannibal, passed away Aug. 17 at home after a brief illness.

A native of St. Prosper, Quebec, Canada, he moved to the United States in 1959.

He worked several years in the forestry industry and was a heavy equipment operator before starting his own business in 1972.

Henri was co-owner of Gilbert’s Tiles & Septic Tanks in Hannibal with his wife, Gervaise. He enjoyed cutting wood and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He and his wife spent many winters in Florida.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Gervaise Gilbert of Hannibal; two children, Christiane (John) Gilbert Waters of Jordan and Serge Gilbert of Hannibal; five grandchildren, Michelle (Brian) Hughes Parker of Port Byron, Ryan Gilbert of Hannibal, Tim (Angel Hutchins) Hughes of Jordan, Brooke Gilbert and Justin Gilbert both of Fulton; two great grandchildren, Austin and Tyler Parker of Port Byron; siblings, Benoit (Jacqueline) Gilbert of Canada, Ligouri Gilbert of West Virginia, Mariange, Claire, Jacqueline, Anitta and Doris Gilbert all of Canada and many nieces and nephews.

Henri was predeceased by siblings, Jeanette, Yolande, Walter, Leonard, Herbert, Clermont Gilbert and brother, Luc Gilbert who died June 29, 2013.

Calling hours and memorial service were Aug. 22 at Foster Funeral Home, Hannibal.

John R. Caruso Jr.: Dairy and crop farmer

John R. Caruso Jr., 53, of Fulton passed away Aug. 13.

He was a dairy and crop farmer and enjoyed gardening, NFL football (especially the NY Jets team), NASCAR racing Earnhardt No. 8 and picking his daughter’s flowers.

John was predeceased by his longtime companion, Rosalie Hutchinson, in May 2013.

Surviving are his children, Joanna (Thomas Hammond) Caruso, Jessica (Don Miller) Caruso, Marie (Elliott Perry) Caruso and Timothy (Tralene Loomis) Paternoster; his father and stepmother, John (Shirley) Caruso Sr.; his mother, Fern Fiore; sisters, Lillian, Sandy and Joan; 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

There are no services or calling hours.  Foster Funeral Home in Fulton has care of arrangements.

Marjory P. “Midge” Northrup: Sang in church choir, chorus

Marjory P. “Midge” Northrup, 85, of Fulton, passed away Aug. 15 at Morningstar Care Center in Oswego.

Born in Fulton, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Marion Haskins Mansfield.

Midge retired in 1990 from Nestle Co. in Fulton and also worked at Mirabito Bros. Grocery as a delivery person.

She was an active member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Volney and sang in its choir. Midge also sang in the Pennellville and Fulton Community Chorus.

She was an avid bowler and hospital volunteer.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Harold and Nicholas Mansfield.

Surviving are her children, Linda (Joseph) Michalski of Lexington, N.C., Gary Northrup of Fulton and Alan (Cheryl) Northrup of Michigan; four grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor (Lee) Loomis of Palermo and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were Aug.18 at Foster Funeral Home, Fulton. Services were Aug. 19 at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, with burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, county Route 45.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 2996 county Route 45, Fulton, 13069.

Lillian DeGroff: Enjoyed gardening, bingo

Lillian DeGroff, 84, of Hannibal died Aug. 18 in Pontiac Care & Rehabilitation Center, Oswego.

She was born in Oswego, the daughter of the late Edward and Hazel (White) Lasora.

She was a member of the Hannibal Fire Department Auxiliary and she enjoyed gardening and playing bingo.

Mrs. DeGroff was predeceased by her husband, Herbert DeGroff, in 1995.

She is survived by her children Richard “Doc” (Julia) DeGroff of Hannibal, Rebecca DeGroff of Hannibal, Ron (Linda) DeGroff of Fulton, Rachael (Scott) Smith of Florida, her brother Jerry White of Connecticut, grandchildren Ricky, Jeremy, Jessica, Elizabeth, Alishia, Scott Jr. and Kayla, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were Aug. 22 in the Hannibal Cemetery. Calling hours were Aug. 21 at the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home, Oswego.
