Creation Studio dance recital May 17 in Oswego

Creation Studio, a Christian Dance Studio located at 198 W. First St., Oswego, will have its recital at 6 p.m. May 17 at the Oswego Community Christian School, 400 E. Albany St., Oswego.

 Dance director Jessica Goodnough said this is the studio’s first year. The recital is titaled “Shine for Him!” and it hopes to encourage the audience through the performances to “uplifting music that points us to what really matters in life — our relationship with God.”

There is an admission price for the recital.

Oswego man edits WWII book

5-14_A&EitalianpowsLuciano J. Iorizzo of Oswego, former professor at SUNY Oswego and former city historian, is the editor of a newly published book about World War II through the eyes of Italian soldiers who were held as prisoners of war around the globe.

“Italian POWs Speak Out at Last: Italian Prisoners of War Break Their Silence” by Carlo Ferroni is published by Teneo Press.

The book consists of four sections, with Italian veterans telling of their experiences before and after the war in Italy, the fighting in North Africa, Greece, Yugoslavia, Russia and Italy itself, and their time as prisoners in the United States, Germany, Britain, India, South Africa, Australia and other countries. Summer at SUNY Oswego’s Rice Creek Field Station will bring many different ways for people to get out and enjoy nature.

There will be naturalist-guided walks on many Saturdays and self-guided tours of the 7,640-square-foot, energy-efficient new headquarters six days a week.

For children and teens, a return of two weeklong Exploring Nature sessions and the new Conservation Field Studies program.

Fulton Memorial Day Salute schedule set

The 33rd annual Fulton Memorial Day Salute celebration on Saturday, May 24 will be held at the Fulton Community Center on West Broadway.

As in the past years, the event will feature the biggest and the best Saturday morning parade, local music groups, a great food court, drinks, rides and fireworks. All entertainment is offered free to the public.

The theme is “SHOWING GRATITUDE TO OUR VETERANS.”  Jim Weinhold, honored 2014 Veteran of the Year, will serve as the Grand Marshal of the Saturday parade.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will feature about 10 bands, including the City of Syracuse Highland Pipe Band, The Central New York Fire and Police Band, The Island Band, the Central Square Middle School Marching Band, The Original Yanks Drum & Bugle Corp and Naples High School Marching Band.

At noon, parade bands will be featured in the Community Center on the Fulton Savings Bank Stage. Awards will be given for winning parade entries.

At 2 p.m., on the Fulton Savings Bank Stage, CNY Arts Center will entertain children and adults alike with a talent show.  At 4, Brass Exchange, a high energy horn band, will round out a not-to-be missed Saturday afternoon. At 7, Memorial Day Salute presents “The Custom Taylor Band,” Central New York’s premier Top 40 country music band, on our stage. The evening concludes with fireworks over the lake at 9:30.

Actors needed for production of “Shrek”

The Oswego Children’s Theater is looking for many more than a few good actors to participate in their upcoming production of “Shrek the Musical.”

Auditions are scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday May 13 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday May 16 at the New Haven Congregational Church, on Route 104 east between Oswego and Mexico.

The production will then get off to a quick start with the first rehearsal scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17 also at the church. Continue reading

New site added for annual Arts Fest

CNY Arts Center announced a new downtown location for the 4th annual Arts Fest, which runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 14.

Included in the festival will be the Arts in the HeART Gallery at 47 S. First St., Fulton.

“We are celebrating the first anniversary of the gallery the entire month of June and felt the downtown location was perfect for our annual celebration of handmade original art,” said Nancy Fox, director.  Continue reading

Breakfast, lunch, dinner

The Minetto United Methodist Church will host a free dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18.

The menu will be ham, mashed potatoes, vegetable and dessert. Donations are not expected but will be accepted.

A collection shed is available in the parking lot at the back of the church for usable clothing items that can be recycled. Acceptable items include: all clothing, shoes, sneakers, purses, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, drapes, and stuffed toys.

The building is fully accessible and is located at the corner of State Route 48 and County Route 8, one block south of the Stewarts Shop, between  Oswego and Fulton, in the village of Minetto.


The Experimental Aircraft Association chapter 486 at Oswego County Airport is having its annual Mother’s Day Breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. May 11 at the EAA hangar, just north of the airport main entrance on Route 176 outside Fulton.

Enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, eggs, home fries, homemade doughuts, coffee, juice and milk.

Free Young Eagle flights (real airplane rides for kids 8-17 ) with parent’s permission, weather permitting.

A chicken and biscuit dinner is scheduled for noon to 3 p.m. Sunday May 18 at the Dugway Methodist Church located on Route 104 in Parish, (two miles east of the Mexico exit off I-81).

The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, applesauce, homemade desserts, coffee, tea and lemonaides.

The dinner benefits the “It’s Not About Me” Group.

Gospel music will start at 2 p.m. at the hurch. There is no charge for the entertainment, but a love offering will be accepted.

Colleen’s School of Dance to hold recital May 16

Colleen’s School of Dance in Phoenix is having its 26th annual dance recital at 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, at John C. Birdlebough High School auditorium. The event is sponsored by the Phoenix Marching Band and Colorguard Boosters.
