Valley Viewpoints: Another cheap shot at Fulton Public Library

Here we go again! I knew it was only a matter of time before someone else took a cheap shot at our local library. First, I would like to suggest to you, Mr. Chapple, that you go back to our library and check a few books out, especially grammar.

The library isn’t taking another bite from the apple and asking for more money. The library is trying to restore the funding that was cut from the 2012 Fulton City budget.

Furthermore, it would only cost you and I the same as a gallon of gasoline a year to support the library through the proposition on the school ballot.

In And Around Hannibal: April 28, 2012

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday – no hurry, please don’t call the EMT’s or the coast guard – I’m just trying to get your attention.

Mayday when spelled as one word is a universal distress signal used primarily by seamen and aviators. It is said three times so it can’t easily be confused with something else in a noisy situation. This Tuesday is another May Day. We’ll call this May Day #2.

The earliest May Days were held before Christianity and are related to Celtic and Germanic festivals as well as the Roman festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers.

Cortland survives late rally by Fulton boys lacrosse

The Fulton boys varsity lacrosse team trailed Cortland by three goals going into the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s game.

Despite trailing most of the game, Fulton rallied to cut Cortland’s lead down to one. Time ran out on the Raiders, however, as Cortland escaped with an 8-7 win.

Cortland jumped out to a quick lead. By the end of the first quarter, it had a 4-1 lead over Fulton.

Thelma DeForest, worked at Birdseye

Thelma DeForest, 82, of Fulton, died Monday, April 23, 2012 at Oswego Hospital.

Born in Victory, she had lived in the Fulton and Hannibal areas since 1954. She had worked Birdseye Foods and Oswego Growers and Shippers.

She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and spending time with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, William DeForest, and daughter, Shirley Hobby.

She is survived by her children, William of Hannibal, Richard of Fulton, and Patricia Irland of Fulton; two grandchildren,  Jessica and Justen; and one great-grandson, Lane.

Calling hours and services were held Friday at Foster Funeral Home, Hannibal. Burial was in Hannibal Center Cemetery.

Rita Scott, LPN at Oswego Hospital

Rita A. Scott, 91, of Oswego, died Saturday, April 21, 2012 in Oswego Hospital.

Mrs. Scott was born in Oswego, the daughter of the late Gaetano and Mary Louise (Gentile) DePasquale. Mrs. Scott was a former employee of Breneman Hartshorn and she worked as an LPN at Oswego Hospital.

Mrs. Scott was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, where she sang in the choir from 1949 until 2003 when she began singing in St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s Churches Resurrection Choir.
