The Town of Schroeppel Department of Community Services is offering an Arts and Crafts program for children ages 12 and under from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The program begins July 31 and runs through Aug. 19. Parents must stay and help supervise their children.

The Arts and Crafts program will be held under the pavilion at Farley Park, Chestnut Street, in Phoenix. The rain location will be at the Town Office Building on Route 57A.

A boys’ baseball camp is set to begin Aug. 4 at SUNY Oswego.

Two days of pitching and catching and two days of hitting and defense for boys age 8 to 12. The cost is $115.

SUNY Oswego retirees and guests will be gathering from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 6 at Breitbeck Park for a brown bag picnic.

The Great Rope play, written by the late Rosemary Nesbitt, is based on a true story and will be presented in one performance only, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 on the Fort Ontario Parade Grounds.

Audiences are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Rain date is Aug. 3.

Tickets are available at river’s end bookstore, Man in the Moon Candies, Arts in the HeART Gallery in Fulton, H. Lee White Marine Museum and Fort Ontario Historic Site.

AARP has scheduled a number of Smart Driver classes.

The classes are $20 for members and $25 for non-members of AARP. Instructors are allowed to receive only a check or money order, NO cash is allowed.

A free guided walk at Rice Creek Field Station at SUNY Oswego is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday Aug. 9.

During the Rice Creek Ramble, visitors will see what creatures are around, what they eat and where they live.

Participants should dress for the weather and call 312-6677 the morning of the hike to check trail conditions. Program size is limited; unable to accommodate groups.

An adult must accompany children.


North Volney Methodist Church is having a car show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9 on the church grounds.

Admission is free. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. and the entry fee is $8 per car.  All years and makes of cars are welcome to register for the show.

Those attending will have the chance to vote on their favorite car and be eligible to win a door prize. The owners of the cars voted as favorites will receive a prize as well.    

In addition, there will be music, a bake sale for your sweet tooth and food and drinks to purchase. Inside the church there will be a small book sale set up so you can take home a new book to read.

The North Volney Methodist Church is located at the corner of County Routes 4 and 6 in Volney.


Cub Scout Pack 57 is having a car show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 16 in Fair Haven.

The show will raise money for the boys’ camping trip on the USS Little Rock in Buffalo.

There is a small registration fee with pre-registrations receiving a discounted price. Registration will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m. There will be a trophy presentation at 4 p.m. The show is open to all classes including motorcycles.

Most of the classes will be judged by the scouts and children ages 5-15, any child interested in voting can sign up at the registration tent.

There will be hourly trivia, and food and drinks will available for purchase. Admission is free but a donation of a non-perishable food item would be appreciated for the local food pantry.


Trinity United Methodist Church in Oswego will be holding a trunk sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Aug. 2.

Sell your garage-sale items from the trunk of your car! Spaces will be available in the church parking lot on East Fourth Street for a limited number of vehicles, on a first-come first-served registration basis, which will allow trunks of their cars, and one table set up behind their car. The fee is $5.

The church will be selling hot dogs, popcorn and cold beverages on the day to all visitors and participants.

Church is not responsible for loss, theft or damage to vehicles or items. No sales of alcohol, firearms, or fire-arm related products or controlled substances allowed on church grounds.


Fulton Idol, a voice workshop and contest for youth ages 10 through 15, will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4 through 8 at First United Church of Fulton, 33 S. Third St., Fulton.

All youth within this age range are welcome to participate. There is no cost to participants.

Monday through Thursday each vocalist will work with skilled voice coaches in order to prepare for a final performance on Friday, Aug. 8. Each participant should bring at least one, and better, two, sheet music elections.

Additional sheet music selections will be available through the church.

The final performance will feature all contestants. Judges will determine first-, second- and third-place winners. Cash prizes will be awarded. The public is welcome to attend.

Fulton Idol is presented by the Open Doors Neighborhood Center, an outreach arm of the First United congregation.


Through a collaborative project with Oswego Economic Development Corps, Oswego County Opportunities, Catholic Charities and the Oswego County Department of Social Services, free Financial Literacy courses are being offered to help individuals in our community to better understand and improve their finances.

Topics covered will range from creating a budget, opening and understanding bank accounts, credit history and reports as well as information on pre-paid versus credit cards. For those attending the class be sure to bring your monthly income information and monthly expenses.
