A contractor was killed Monday June 30 in an accident in the recycling area of the Novelis plant in Scriba.
The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, Oswego County about Coordinator’s Office, Scriba Volunteer Fire Department and Menter Ambulance responded about 12:53 p.m. to the plant at 449 county Route 1A in Scriba.
Novelis and the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office have identified the person as 31-year-old Steven Cooper of Phoenix. Cooper was a metal resources operator for Matrix and had worked at the Scriba plant since 2006.
“We are cooperating fully with the authorities in their ongoing investigation, and until it is complete, we are limited in what we can share,” Katie Toomey, spokesperson for Novelis, said in an email. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the contractor’s family during this difficult time.”
This is the second fatal industrial accident at Novelis in three years. In October 2011, 46-year-old Edward M. Carvey, of Hannibal, died from injuries he sustained when he became trapped in a piece of equipment.
The investigation into Cooper’s death is ongoing.
“Novelis takes seriously the safety of every person who comes into our plants, including employees, contractors and other visitors,” Toomey added.
