Students from the Oswego County BOCES Public Safety and Justice program, Nursing Assistant program and the three New Visions programs participated in a ground school training session with Mercy Flight Central, a nonprofit air medical transportation service.

Pilot Dan Tanton, Flight Paramedic Bob Breese and Flight Nurse Yuri Pashchuk arrived via helicopter at the campus in Mexico and spoke to high school juniors and seniors about the benefits of air medical transportation, their individual roles as part of a critical care response team, and the services they are equipped to provide aboard the aircraft.

“We bring the hospital,” the crew said as they explained how they are an extension of the care that Emergency Medical Service crews are able to provide.

In addition, Mercy Flight Outreach Coordinator Colleen Gleeson joined the training to speak to students about the appropriate utilization of air medical services and what is expected of emergency ground responders to aid with patient transportation.

In preparation for the flight’s arrival, Gleeson talked to students about the area of approach, exit points, and danger areas of the aircraft for ground responders.

Cadets in the Public Safety and Justice program often have an interest in pursuing professional training in the areas of police science, emergency management and firefighting and often serve as the emergency ground responders responsible for requesting air medical transportation and establishing a safe, secure and well-marked landing zone area for air medical transportation.
