Russel Stannard, chief canal lock operator, Navy veteran

Russel Stannard, 76, of Sterling died Thursday June 19 in Oswego Hospital after a short illness.

Mr. Stannard was born in Boonville, NY, the son of the late William and Winifred Stannard.

He retired in 1995 as a chief lock operator for the NYS Canal Corp. He served in the US Navy from 1955 until 1969.

Mr. Stannard was a member of the American Legion Post 1, Albany NY, and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 658, Fair Haven. He was a Fair Haven village trustee from 1974 until 1978 during their Bicentennial Celebration.

Mr. Stannard is survived by his wife, Patricia Stannard of Sterling; children Janice (Jeff Treasure) Skinner of Sterling, Darlene (Ron Dates) Burley of Martville, Lee Simpkins of Hannibal, Arica (Mark) Harteis of Oswego; sisters June MacArthur of Oswego, Carol Brookes of FL, Donna Cooke of Fair Haven; 13 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services and burial in Springbrook Cemetery will be private.

The arrangements are in the care of the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home 147 W. Fourth St., Oswego
