News in Brief: Mexico alumni, Oswego Valley Fiddlers, and more

The Mexico Academy and Central School Alumni Association will host its annual banquet beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at the Mexico VFW on State Route 3. 

A tour of the high school begins at 1:30 followed by a banquet and social hour at 4 p.m. in the VFW Hall’s main reception room. There will be music and a full buffet dinner consisting of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, cole slaw, baked beans, baked ziti, tossed salad, molded salads and rolls. There will be cake for dessert. A cash bar will be available for the evening.

Alumni awards will be presented to Mildred Robinson Murray, Class of 1952; and Dr. John Schenck, Class of 1957.

A free concert of old time fiddle music by the Oswego Valley Fiddlers is scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame and Museum, 1121 Comins Road, Osceola.


The Oswego County Office for the Aging will sponsor a free informational seminar, “Medicare 101,” to help beneficiaries navigate the various program options.

The seminar will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 24, at the Nick Sterio Public Health Clinic, 70 Bunner St., Oswego.

The Oswego City Concert Band and Jazz Band concert schedule has been announced for this summer.

These free Wednesday night concerts overlook beautiful Lake Ontario, while providing an enjoyable evening for the young and young at heart.

The concert band, under the direction of Trevor Jorgensen, will perform at 7:30 p.m. June 25, July 2 and 16, and at 7 p.m. Aug. 6 and 13. The band performs traditional marches, overtures and other classic band literature, along with music from Broadway musicals and film.

The Jazz Band, under the direction of Stan Gosek, will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. June 30 and 7 p.m. Aug. 20. These concerts feature the music of the greatest “Big Bands” of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s.

All concerts are at Breitbeck Park and concert goers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

The concerts are sponsored by the City of Oswego, with additional funding provided by the Music Performance Trust Fund and Oswego County Musicians Union, local 267-441.
