Kyle Doppelheuer, a first-grader at Michael A. Maroun Elementary in Phoenix, embodies the school’s word of the month — citizenship.

Doppelheuer is a budding philanthropist, and has provided many service hours to the community. Walmart recognized Doppelheuer’s volunteerism at the opening ceremony of the new Super Walmart in Clay.

He was presented a $1,000 check to donate to a charity of his choice.

Doppelheuer’s favorite nonprofit is the Salvation Army. He has volunteered at the Army’s Emergency Family Shelter, and enjoys helping children and families in need.

The obvious choice was for Doppelheuer to donate the big check to the Salvation Army of Syracuse. The grant money will assist in funding the organization’s programs and services.

Doppelheuer was also presented with a special award from Walmart, a Yankee cap and tickets to see a game.
