A year’s worth of practice and dedication in the music room wrapped up with the Emerson J. Dillon Middle School Jazz Ensemble’s finale concert recently.

Under the direction of Jim DeMauro, student musicians performed “Side Slippin,’” “Pepperoni Blues,” “I Beeped When I Should Have Bopped,” “Grabbin’ Some Air,” and “Don’t Miss the Bus.”

The songs featured several solo performances on the saxophone, trombone and the trumpet.

“This is like learning another language and they’re doing a fantastic job,” DeMauro told the audience. “Keep music in your hearts and do great things.”

In addition to the musical performance, two students earned special recognition during the concert. Drummers Julie Yates and Catherine Musumeci were called to the front of the stage where Kayleigh Moyer — a Phoenix graduate and a rising star in the music industry – presented each musician with a new drum case.

The cases were manufactured and donated by Humes & Berg, which endorses Moyer.
