Phoenix baseball makes playoffs; loses to VVS in first round

The Phoenix varsity baseball team qualified for the playoffs even though it lost two of its last three regular season games.On May 14, the Firebirds held off Marcellus 2-1, but then lost to Westhill  9-6 on May 15 and county foe Fulton 4-0 on May 17.

Phoenix ended the season 10-7. They earned the #10 seed in the Class B, Section 3 Playoffs where they faced Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on May 22. They lost that contest 6-5.

Against Marcellus, the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead after two scoreless innings. Phoenix quickly answered back, scoring two unanswered runs in the fourth to escape with a 2-1 win.

Leading the way for the Firebirds was Codie Corso with two hits, followed by Emilio Tassone with a hit and an RBI and Dylan Borza, Jordan Jock and Bryce Plante had a hit each.

Emilio Tassone pitched a complete game for Phoenix, throwing seven strikeouts while allowing one run off six hits.

In the Westhill game, Westhill jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second. The Firebirds battled back, scoring four unanswered runs during the next two and a half innings to take a 6-5 lead.

But Westhill stormed ahead down the stretch, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 9-6 win.

Phoenix was led by Codie Corso with a hit and two RBIs, followed by Bryce Plante with a hit and an RBI and Dylan Borza, Dan Frawley, Zach Schlacter and Emilio Tassone had a hit each.

On the mound, the Firebirds were led by Jordan Jock with three strikeouts while allowing five runs off five hits in five innings of work. In relief of Jock, Bradley Dietz threw five strikeouts while allowing four runs off two hits in an inning pitched.
