Backus named Woman of Distinction

Jane Backus of Mexico was selected as state Sen. Patricia Ritchie’s 2014 Woman of Distinction from the 48th Senate District. She was honored recently at a special ceremony at the State Capitol. A retired English teacher, Backus taught seniors and sophomores at both Ogdensburg Free Academy and Mexico Academy and Central Schools for more than 25 years. Today, she is an extremely active member of her community, volunteering her time with many organizations that aim to better the Central New York region. Backus was one of more than two dozen women nominated for the program who were recognized at a ceremony held earlier this month at Watertown’s Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library.
