The cities of Fulton and Oswego and their police department were honored Monday by AAA Western and Central New York.
AAA cited the cities and police for their success in AAA’s Community Traffic Safety Program.
AAA’s Community Traffic Safety Program is an awards and recognition program for communities of all sizes nationwide that identify and address their local traffic safety issues.
The program considers basic crash statistics, presence of a traffic safety leadership group, projects, and their effectiveness. The awards progress from Honorable Mention to Bronze, Silver, Gold, and to the highest level, Platinum.
Gold Awards, given to communities that implement programs and projects that demonstrate superior effort at addressing local traffic safety issues, were presented to the City of Fulton and the City of Oswego.
“AAA is honored to be recognizing these communities that are making traffic safety a top priority,” said Tony Spada, President and CEO of AAA Western and Central New York. “Their dedication and commitment to this cause deserves to be applauded.”
Fulton is receiving its seventh Gold Award, demonstrating success in addressing: aggressive, distracted, drunk and impaired driving, occupant protection and child passenger safety, bicycle, pedestrian, work zone, school bus and school zone safety and computerized mapping of motor vehicle accidents to identify problem areas and improve safety.
Fulton has participated in the program for 12 years and is the recipient of five Platinum and seven Gold Awards in total.
Oswego was presented with its second Gold Award, having previously participated in 2008. Oswego demonstrated success in addressing speeding, aggressive and impaired driving, occupant protection, and pedestrian and school zone safety.
Only 12 communities in New York State received Platinum honors: Brockport, Camillus, DeWitt, Freeport, Garden City, Liverpool, Manlius, New York City, Northport, Old Westbury, Rye and White Plains.
Participation in AAA’s Community Traffic Safety Program is open to communities of all sizes nationwide.
