Two teams in first and second place in the Freedom Conference standings face each other tonight at G. Ray Bodley High School.
The 16-1 Fulton Red Raiders wrestling team hosts the 9-1 Mexico Tigers and whoever wins the match this evening will be crowned League Champions for the 2013-2014 season.
This evening is also “Pee Wee” night, as spectators will be treated to a sneak peek at the Fulton wrestlers of the future.
In some previous action, this past weekend, the Red Raiders attended the Clayton Bernard tournament at Hilton High School near Rochester. Seventeen schools participated and Fulton ended the tournament in second place.
The host school Hilton came in first, with Mexico in seventh place. Bringing home the runner-up awards for the Red Raiders were Joe Abelgore ( 99 pounds), Mitch Woodworth (120 pounds), Brandon Hill (132 pounds) and Tim Holden (138 pounds).
Coming in third place were Travis Kemp (195 pounds), Matt Marshall (220 pounds) and Malachi Manford (285 pounds). Jacob Bailey (152 pounds), Travis Race (160 pounds) and James Bailey (170 pounds) all brought home the fourth place prize in their weight classes.
Fred Ashby (285 pounds) came in fifth. Kevin Tucker (113 pounds) and Collin Flynn (145 pounds) finished the day in sixth place.
On Wednesday of last week, East Syracuse Minoa came to town and wrestlers from Fulton were victorious in every weight class, winning by a score of 75-0.
Getting forfeits were Travis Kemp (195 pounds), Fred Ashby (285 pounds), Nick Noel (99 pounds), Joe Abelgore (106 pounds), Roy French (113 pounds), and Kevin Tucker (120 pounds). Jonathan Earl (132 pounds) won by a 4-0 decision, Collin Flynn (145 pounds) defeated his opponent by a score of 4-3 and Jacob Bailey (152 pounds) came out on top by a score of 6-3.
Getting pins were James Bailey (170 pounds), Noah Gates (182 pounds), Nick Morrison (126 pounds), Brandon Hill (138 pounds), and Travis Race (160 pounds).
That evening was also senior night for the Fulton wrestlers, who are in their final year of competing. They, along with their parents, were honored for their years of devotion and sacrifice to this sport at this school.
Making one of their final appearances in their home gym were:
** James Bailey, who plans on attending St. John Fisher College this fall, he was joined on the mat by his parents Greg and Lisa Bailey.
** Travis Kemp, who plans on attending Cayuga Community College and later on Paul Smiths College, he was joined on the mat by his parents April and Ed Kemp.
** Fred Ashby, who plans on attending a culinary institute, was joined on the mat by his parents Fred and Kathy Ashby.
** Brandon Hill, who plans on continuing his wrestling career at a SUNY college, was joined on the mat by his parents Pauline Hill and Tim Collins. Special recognition also goes out to Brandon Hill`s aunt and uncle, Donna and Rick Crosby, for all they`ve done for him through the years and for their continuing support of the Fulton Wrestling program.
This Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, the annual Section 3 Dual Meet Tournament will take place. In the 26 seasons this tournament has been in existence, the Red Raiders have made 23 appearances in the finals and came home with the top prize 18 times.
This event features the best wrestling teams in the 11-county Central New York region. The first matches of the day begin at 10 a.m.
