The Phoenix varsity football team fell to Marcellus Oct. 18 in front of a gracious Senior Night crowd.
The score was 54-12.
Sixteen seniors played in their final home game on a history making night. The contest marked the first ever night game hosted by the Phoenix football program.
Before the game, seniors Billy Ostrander, Austin Furco, Dylan Doupe, Zach Young, Ashton Morrison, Trevor Ferens, Derick Powell, Mike Mironti, Tyler Sahm, Daniel Taylor, Billy Stone, Bobby Reynolds, Sage Dygert, Ralph Casillo, Tyler Hanna and Nick Tassone were honored for their years of dedication to the program.
In the game, Marcellus got off to a quick start and didn’t look back. The Mustangs wasted little time getting in gear, jumping out to a 20-0 lead during the first quarter.
During the second quarter, they expanded their lead to take a 33-0 lead into halftime.
Marcellus refused to let up, even though Phoenix scored a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters. Despite the Firebirds respectable efforts, Marcellus came away with the impressive 42 point win.
Leading the way for Phoenix was Brock Maruscak, who ran for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14 carries. Doupe had 14 rushes for 45 yards. Tim Gandino ran for 33 yards on 14 carries and Billy Ostrander and Ben Bulgrien ran for 11 yards on 6 rushes for the Firebirds.
Defensively, Phoenix was led by Austin Wirth with 6 tackles, followed by Ostrander with 4 tackles, Doupe and Young with 3 tackles each and Powell with 2 tackles. Kameron Miller, Tyler Sahm and Nick Tassone combined for 3 tackles for the Firebirds.
Phoenix ends the season 0-7.
