Quoting from Tryphene Darling Farnham as written in 1920 on her reflections of the North Hannibal School as recorded in the Hannibal Historical Society’s Hannibal History in “picture and prose.”
“Fifty and 60 years ago, we always had religious services at the schoolhouse every Sunday. The best ministers of Hannibal preached there. Rev. Jacob Fleming preached here a good many years. He was a farmer who lived near Lewis’ Corners. It was very easy for the young people to marry then. They just drove over to Jakey Flemings and he would tie the knot tight, as I never knew of any getting a divorce who were married by him.
