Joanne E. Hedges, 77, a resident of Sterling, died Wednesday, July 24, at Oswego Hospital.
Born in Oswego on March 9, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Hazel Murray. She was raised in Oswego, the youngest of five children.
She met Royal Hedges in Oswego when he was serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Drum. They were married and deployed to France to help rebuild the war-torn country and were a military family for 25 years. All of her children were girls until she eventually got her prayers answered and gave birth to a son, Royal Hedges Jr., the youngest child, after trying for so many years. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home for 25 years and lived in Hannibal.
After retirement, she was well cared for by her family and children. She lived in Fair Haven for seven years before relocating to the Sterling area in 2006. She enjoyed church and prayer meetings, keeping a clean house and most of all cooking. She was famous for lemon meringue pie which her husband loved.
She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Royal Hedges Sr., who in 2000; a daughter, Amy Lovejoy in 2010; and three sisters. Surviving are her six children, Royal (Mary) Hedges Jr. of Goodyear, Ariz.; Vicky (Ean) Tennant of Sterling; Nancy (Terry) Zukovsky of Leesport, Pa.; Patricia (Mark) Sampson of Wolcott; Tammy Hedges of Elbridge and Kimberly (Paul) Martindale of Wolcott; a sister, Betty Martin; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours and services were held Saturday at Sterling Christian Church. Burial was in Hannibal Village Cemetery in Hannibal. Foster Funeral Home in Hannibal has care of arrangements.
