Muriel Allerton, 93, of Fulton, passed away July 25 at Oswego Hospital.
A native of West New York, N.J., she was the daughter of the late John and Eva Jobst.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from New York University. Muriel was known by many as the “Mother of Fulton” for her many years of volunteer service in the community. These organizations included, but were not limited to, the League of Women Voters, Fulton Historical Society, Fulton Art Association, Oswego Opera Theater, Fulton Soup Kitchen, Fulton American Field Service, Oswego County Council on the Arts, the former Oswego Press Club, Fulton Red Cross, Fulton Salvation Army and Fulton Music Association. She also served on the board of the State University of New York at Oswego. S
he thoroughly enjoyed her contributions to the community. Muriel was elected for two terms as mayor of Fulton, which she considered an honor; she was proud of the experience. She was honored as a New York state Woman of Distinction in 2010 by then state Sen. Darrel Aubertine. In 2002, she was honored in the “Book of Lives & Legacies” of the National Women’s Hall of Fame, Seneca Falls.
She worked as a journalist and wrote a column in a local newsletter for many years. Her interests included knitting, sewing, crafts, politics, listening to the news, reading and writing. Muriel was an avid fan of the arts and loved hotdogs and Manhattans and hated exercise.
Muriel is survived by her husband of 69 years, Joseph Allerton of Fulton; her children, Peter (Margo) Allerton of Toronto, Canada, and their daughter, Caelin; Steven Allerton and his friend Jane of Key West, Fla.; Martha Allerton and Michael of California; her cousin, Carol Miller and her in-laws, John (Lee) Allerton and George (Viola) Allerton.
Her beloved son, Paul Allerton predeceased her in 2001.
Memorial services will be held at a date to be announced.
