by Rob Tetro

The Hannibal varsity baseball team split games against Solvay and Westhill to begin the 2013 season.

Hannibal scored three of its four runs during the first three innings of the game en route to a 4-0 win over Solvay April 6.

Westhill, however, proved to be superior than Solvay. Westhill scored four of its five runs during the second and third innings April 9 to come away with a 5-1 win over Hannibal.

The Warriors scored a run in each of the first three innings against Solvay. While keeping Solvay off the scoreboard, Hannibal added another run during the top of the sixth inning to cap off the 4-0 shutout.

Four different players got hits for the Warriors. Jake Shortslef, Billy Cook, Matt Wagner and Matt Bogawitch all had hits against Solvay.

Greg Pitcher earned the win on the mound for Hannibal. He struck out five batters while giving up only one hit in four innings of work.

Jake Shortslef relieved Pitcher. Shortslef struck out five Solvay batters while giving up only two hits in three innings of play.

The Warriors didn’t see the outcome they hoped for when they took on Westhill.
