Two Firebird grapplers compete in state tournament

by Rob Tetro

Last week, two Phoenix wrestlers — Rowdy Prior and Nick Tighe — took part in the New York State wrestling championships in Albany.

In his first match, Prior earned a 6-2 win. During his second match, Prior came away with an 11-1 win. Prior then pinned his semifinal opponent to secure a spot in the state finals.

Unfortunately for Prior, he came up short in his bid to win a state championship.  Despite trailing most of the match, Prior maneuvered a craddle on his opponent to take the lead with just a little time left. Unfortunately for Prior, his opponent reversed the craddle to regain the lead just before the match ended.

Despite the heartbreaking conclusion to the match, Phoenix Coach Gene Mills suggested that Prior has little to be disappointed with.

“Being second in the State of New York is a heck of an honor,” Mills said.

Tighe had a history-making experience while in Albany. He became only the second person from Section III to win three state titles.

The last person from Section III to win three state titles was a West Genesee wrestler in 1974.
