There will be a new skipper leading the way for the Phoenix varsity softball team when practices begin March 11.
This spring, Raina Hinman will take over for coach Gary Jones.
The excitement she has isn’t just for her new position but rather for the new direction that the softball program is heading. Coach Dan Murphy will be the new junior varsity softball coach while Hinman named Brock Matlock as her assistant coach.
Hinman is no stranger to the sport of softball. She began playing softball when she was five years old and went on to play softball at all three levels for the Phoenix school district.
In 1996, she won the Defensive Most Valuable Player Award for the success she had playing center field.
After high school, she went on to play in the outfield for Oswego State.
In recent years, Hinman served as a coach for both the modified and junior varsity teams in Phoenix.
While examining the immediate tasks before her, Hinman pointed out that Phoenix Softball will be in rebuilding mode this season.
