The 2012-2013 wrestling season is coming to a close. All that is left is for the individual New York State Tournament taking place this weekend at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Fulton sophomore Mitch Woodworth (106 pounds) and his teammate Thomas Hill (112 pounds) are representing Section III at the Division One Tournament.
At the state qualifying event two weeks ago, Woodworth had quite a battle in the finals against Liverpool’s Audey Ashkar. Early in the first period, the two wrestlers’ heads collided and the Fulton sophomore then had an open wound. Even though it was bleeding throughout the match, the coaches kept putting on a fresh set of bandages every few minutes.
After finishing the season in second place last season, Woodworth refused to let a little blood get in the way of a title this year.
After the end of the third period, he won by a score of 4-2, thereby earning his first trip to the state tournament.
With that win, he became a member of a very exclusive club which also includes his father, Mark, who won a Section III wrestling championship for Fulton in 1987, and his older brother, Nick, who achieved back to back titles for the Red Raiders in 2011 and 2012.
Hill has now won this tournament for the third time and is making another trip to our state capitol to compete with the best in this sport.
