The Phoenix boys varsity basketball team’s season came to an end with a loss to Bishop Grimes in the opening round of the Section III Class B Playoffs Feb. 15.

Bishop Grimes took the lead during the second quarter and didn’t look back. During the second and third quarters alone, Bishop Grimes outscored Phoenix 41-20 en route to a 64-44 win.

The Firebirds traveled to Bishop Grimes (12-7) as the ninth seed while Bishop Grimes earned the eighth seed. The winner of this game earned the right to move on to play top-seeded South Jefferson.

Despite the eventual outcome, Phoenix built a five-point lead over Bishop Ludden by the end of the first quarter. However, once the second quarter began, it all began to go downhill for the Firebirds.

Bishop Ludden outscored Phoenix by 10 points to storm ahead and take a five-point lead into halftime at 31-26.

Bishop Grimes continued to pour it on during the third quarter.  Bishop Grimes outscored Phoenix by 11 points to extend its lead to 16 points by the end of the quarter. Even though the Firebirds were far more competitive during the fourth quarter, they were unable to cut into the deficit they faced.
