The Phoenix boys varsity basketball team lost a hard fought game to Syracuse Academy of Science Feb. 11.
Syracuse Academy Of Science built a 17-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. It was a deficit that took Phoenix two full quarters to recover from. Syracuse Academy Of Science, however, got it done down the stretch to come away with a 55-53 win.
Syracuse Academy Of Science (12-5) got off to a decent start. By the end of the first quarter, they had built a seven-point lead over Phoenix. The Firebirds cut into the deficit they faced during the second quarter. They outscored Syracuse Academy of Science by a point to trail 32-26 at halftime.
Phoenix rallied to tie the game during the third quarter. The Firebirds outscored Syracuse Academy of Science by six points to tie the game at 43-43 by the end of the quarter.
Syracuse Academy of Science outscored Phoenix during the fourth quarter. Syracuse Academy Of Science’ fourth quarter scoring advantage proved to be the difference in the game as it held off the Firebirds for the two-point win.
Leading the way for Phoenix were Dylan Doupe and Chris Vaverchak, who both scored 15 points. Kyle Huniford finished with nine points and Richard Howington chipped in eight points. Zach Sisera and Bryce Plante combined to score six points.
With the loss, Phoenix concludes the regular season with an overall record of 11-7 and a 9-6 record in division play.
