Rebecca Hass of Fair Haven won her second consecutive gold medal this past Sunday in the Junior Bobsled division of the Empire State Winter Games in Lake Placid.
She piloted her sled with brakeman Baily Vaness from Keene Valley, N.Y. Hass drove her sled through the tricky corners of the Olympic Bobsled track at Mt. Vanhoevenberg, securing her second gold medal in the Empire State Games. She won gold last year as well.
The team of Hass and Vaness also grabbed gold medals in last season U.S. Championships.
Hass made a dramatic come from behind victory. With a near Hass found herself .60 of a second behind the pace, putting her in third place.
She came back to win the next two heats with near perfect runs pulling off the victory by over a second, a large margin in the sport of Bobsled.
She is an eighth-grade student at Red Creek Central School and at Lake Placid School during the winter. She has been bobsledding for the past three seasons, learning to maneuver the sled down the icy turns. The junior bobsled program trains inspiring athletes ages 10-16 the skills needed to become world class drivers.
Her sled is sponsored by the Fair Haven Motel, Fair Haven, and MillPond Nursery, Martville.
