Phoenix girls end with two losses

The Phoenix girls varsity basketball team’s season concluded with losses to Bishop Ludden and Chittenango.

The Lady Firebirds’ season ends with a final overall record of 3-15.

Bishop Ludden outscored Phoenix 26-15 during the first and third quarters to come away with the win Jan. 31.

An efficient third quarter was also a benefit for Chittenango when it took on Phoenix Feb. 5. Chittenango cushioned a slim halftime lead by outscoring Phoenix 15-8 during the third quarter en route to a hard fought win.

Bishop Ludden (8-8) got off to a decent start when it took on the Lady Firebirds. By the end of the first quarter, they had built a five-point advantage. Bishop Ludden added to its lead during the second quarter, outscoring Phoenix by three points to take a 27-19 halftime lead.

Bishop Ludden all but put the game out of reach during the third quarter. Bishop Ludden outscored Phoenix by six points to extend its lead to 14 points by the end of the quarter. However, The Lady Firebirds kept battling and cut into Bishop Ludden’s lead. Unfortunately, Bishop Ludden’s lead proved to be insurmountable as it came away with a 53-41 win.

Leading the way for Phoenix was Katherine Oliver, who scored 13 points. Following Oliver was Sydney Patzke with eight points and Kimberly Holbrook with six points.

Meghan Barry chipped in 5 points while Kylie Wallace, Justice Mills and Shannon Dolan combined to score nine points. A pivotal third quarter run proved to be key in Chittenango’s (5-12) win over Phoenix.

After a competitive first quarter, The Lady Firebirds only faced a one-point deficit. The second quarter proved to be equally as competitive. Chittenango outscored Phoenix by a point to take a two-point lead into halftime at 12-10.
