Phoenix boys basketball wins on last-second free throw

The Phoenix boys varsity basketball season got off to a thrilling start following a hard fought win against Hannibal Monday.

Though Phoenix jumped out to a six-point lead early in the game, Hannibal hung tough and rallied to tie the game going into the fourth quarter.  After an exciting fourth quarter, the Firebirds came away with a 49-48 win.

After an impressive first quarter, Phoenix had built a six-point lead over Hannibal. During the second quarter, both teams scored 13 points as the Firebirds took a 26-20 lead into halftime. However, The Warriors came out swinging during the third quarter. They outscored the Firebirds by six points to tie game going into the fourth quarter.

Despite a valiant effort by Hannibal, Phoenix got it done down the stretch. They scored 10 points during the fourth quarter, including the game-winning free throw by Kyle Huniford with less than a second on the clock.
