Phoenix girls basketball team competes in B’ville tournament

The Phoenix girls varsity basketball team began the season by splitting games against Rome Free Academy and Cato-Meridian in the Bill Middleton Tournament in Baldwinsville.

Rome Free Academy outscored Phoenix by 14 points during the second quarter of Friday’s game en route to a 63-20 win.

The Lady Firebirds regrouped the following day against Cato-Meridian. After a solid first half of play, Phoenix had a 12-point halftime over Cato-Meridian, which proved to be insurmountable. The Lady Firebirds came away with a 47-37 win.

Rome Free Academy set the tone early on during the first game. RFA jumped out to an 11-point lead during the first quarter. RFA outscored Phoenix by 14 points during the second quarter to take a 33-8 lead into halftime.

RFA’s onslaught continued into the second half. During the third quarter, the team outscored the Lady Firebirds by 10 points to expand its lead to 35 points. Rome Free Academy finished off the game by outscoring Phoenix by eight points to cap off the 43-point win.

The Lady Firebirds were led by Kylie Wallace, who scored 10 points. Sydney Patzke scored four points while Justice Mills, Kimberly Holbrook and Alex Wilson combined to chip in six points for Phoenix.
